... topic: 2734 3D Printed Track and Turnouts posted: 9 Aug 2015 05:18 from: Andrew Barrowman Greetings fellow Templotters, As some of you already know, I've been messing about trying to print turnout bases on a 3D printer. It's fairly easy to create a 3D model of the timbers in CAD from any Templot template. It's also fairly simple to drag models of the chairs into the correct positions and orientation and combine them to produce an STL file to drive a printer. What is not so easy is producing 3D models for chairs that a) actually work, and b) don't look too horrible! I think I have reached a point where I'm limited by the printing technology itself. The results are actually a lot better than I thought they might be when I started out. Anyway, I've been making some wild guesses about chair dimensions, and I have not had a lot of luck finding anything on the Web. Any information would be greatly appreciated. The final mimic panel is going to be something like 800mm long by 400mm deep. I can't say the exact size as it's going to be governed by the need to place LED's within the track lines. The bezels of the LED's are 7mm diameter. In total there will be at least 72 LED's on the panel showing the turnout detection of 36 turnouts. What is the best way of accomplishing this? Hi Stewart, Excellent. Many thanks for taking the trouble to do that. But please note that Templot has a function to put the timber ends in line, you don't need to do it manually: ends_in_line.png Normally centralized timbering is used when timbers are skewed (equalized timbering), and timber ends are in line when timbers are square (square-on timbering). I started with a section of plain track from the box file and laid out the basics then inserted turnouts into that plain track. I made the assumption that Templot would insert USA turnouts into the track at the required points on the plans (using Template -> Insert turnout into plain track). One interesting point that I stumbled across while flicking through it is on the sheet covering turnout construction using C&L components (23.6.4). It says that you "do not want a track gauge that has a firm grip on the running head and holds the rail upright" since as soon as you remove the gauge the chairs will tilt the rail inwards (as they are supposed to) therefore making the track under-gauge. I've never seen this mentioned anywhere before. Can anyone expand on this? Do the gauges produced by the Scalefour Society have this problem with track constructed using C&L chairs and if so how do people get around it? In some of these cases, I have aligned the main side and then altered the adjoining track-work for the turnout side to mate up with that end (but I am not absolutely sure this is what I should really do), (I know, someone will scream the dreaded words "compromise").
