161. Old Rail?
... topic: 520 Old Rail? posted: 11 Aug 2008 02:43 from: GeoffJones A question for our historians, but nothing to do with Templot I recently moved to the village of Pontesbury in Shropshire and walking the dog along the old railway track near Pontesbury station I have noticed the remains of an old sign supported by a steel post shaped as shown in the attached rough sketch. The apex is slightly sloped to one side, suggesting either design or wear from wheels. The base is about 150mm across. Is this a piece of very old rail (possibly narrow gauge) or just some sort of heavy angle iron used for such purposes. It does seem pretty hefty for simply supporting a sign. I haven't had time to find out much about the line yet but I do know that it was a single line branch of the Shrewsbury and Welshpool Joint Railway and the principal traffic was lead from the mines at Snailbeach which was brought down to Pontesbury station on a 2ft 4 1/2in narrow gauge line. Any ideas? Regards Geoff ...

Generally it has been a great success, with none of the occasional database errors and backup problems which we used to get before. The only errors have been those perpetrated by yours truly. However, UK connection speed has not always been as fast as it might be, and there was one weekend when many UK members lost connection entirely for a couple of days. Jim is now suggesting that we move down the road to a different data centre in Columbus with faster and more reliable connections to the UK. My tests have indicated a significantly faster connection, but before I say yes, I would like to be sure that everyone will be able to access the new server and with good connection speed. Can I ask you all therefore to try clicking this link. It is another ...

If you zoom inside the rectangle you won't see any difference from using the rectangle, it should be faster than before regardless. But only for large track plans. During the process I (re-)discovered an article by Philip Millard, titled as above, in the HMRS Journal of Jan/Mar 1994, Volume 15 No1, ISSN 0963-195X. In diagrams and tables the author sets out data from British Railway Track (1963) relating to straight cut switches, but more importantly has reproduced data from The Platelayers' Handbook of 1901 over five pages covering most common turnout varieties and junctions. The 1963 (and earlier versions) book comes up quite regularly on e-bay, but I imagine the Handbook is as rare as hen's teeth so the article is invaluable! ... topic: 2793 extend/shorten to meet background template posted: 26 Nov 2015 11:05 from: Martin Wynne I'm working on a new extend/shorten to meet function, primarily as an aid to using the make transition functions. The intention is that the original templates can be automatically adjusted for length to fit the new transition template. This will avoid the tedious business of zooming in to do that manually. Likewise when adjusting the underlying templates after make diamond-crossing at intersection. The new function will also be useful in other circumstances where the position of a template boundary needs to be moved, for example to enable a turnout to be inserted. Or where a gap or overlap needs to be eliminated, for example before using the roll rails to match function. At present such tasks have to be done manually. It is working quite well (within sensible limits). But I'm uncertain how much misalignment to allow before reporting an error in the original template alignments. This was at a time when no-one modelled LT, so I was alone and decided to build my layout using copperclad built track and to model the conductor rails "above running rail height" to mimic the prototypical situation~ and in the (probably mistaken) hope that I may one day find a way to actually use the conductor rails to power the models direct. That was fine until some years ago, EFE brought out their tube stock which I then wanted to run, and the only way I could achieve that with a small powered motor bogie was by using 12mm dia wheels in order to clear the motor housing between the wheels.
