... worked in that way! What am I trying to do? Well, it struck me that Templot could be used for designing things other than track. In this instance, I have a need to build some GWR paling fencing (the type with vertical uprights); in 4mm one can just use Ratio, but in 3mm this isn't an option, and using the 4mm stuff looks wrong. If you think about it, such fences in outline look just like track, with sleepers representing the vertical bits and rail the horizontal battens. So, my intention is to produce a template of such fencing which can act as a guide to building some. As well as plain fencing, it should be possible to produce templates for such things as gates, which would enable one to produce a complete bespoke plan to fit a given site. I actually only need a fairly short section, which includes two types of gate. I haven't yet found definitive measurements for everything, but using the 4mm Ratio stuff and Great Western Way as a guide, the vertical ...

... used to fix the timbers would penetrate down through the template into the base. But what method of track construction are you using? Outdoor lines need a good allowance for expansion and contraction -- fixing it solidly to a board may not be ideal. You might want something resilient in between, such as a layer of roofing felt. I myself wouldn't want to build complex pointwork in outdoor conditions. It might be easier to build it indoors on small panels of say external plywood, or even on the old traditional method of battens. For plastic timbers you could update that idea with plastic strips, such as from the Evergreen range: http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/Strips.htm e.g. 24" long x 188 thou square? (3 /16" sq). Buried in ballast the strips wouldn't be too badly affected by sunlight-embrittlement. Just an idea, I haven't actually tried it. ... bought some tools to try. Since I am going to be building an outdoor O scale railroad, I will be using plastic ties instead of wood. Plastic will be difficult to spike. I may try gluing first to hold things in position then drilling some holes for spikes. Hi again My outdoor line uses custom turnouts designed in Templot. These are constructed using Peco SM32 components for 16mm scale, 32mm gauge. These are moulded in plastic and assembled using a suitable solvent. I constructed the turnouts with a 1mm thick plastic batten underneath the turnout timbers (ties) to maintain the alignment of the timbering. The only aids to construction other than tools were the Templot templates, a steel rule marked in mm and an offcut of rail (as a check gauge)- no expensive fancy jigs or gauges. Hopefully the picture will demonstrate! 54_210431_240000000.jpg One of the big advantages of Templot is that you can have the scale/gauge combination that suits you and you can specify every aspect of the track design. A side benefit is that the cost of ...

... brackets screwed to the walls, so that there are no legs to get in the way and take up precious space in my shed. The brackets support a bed of 18mm ply cut approximately 2' (600mm) deep (from back to front) that goes all around the perimeter of the shed with a lifting flap at the door. On top of this shelf the various layout baseboards (between 3'6"& 5'0" long) sit approximately 3.5" (90mm) above that surface supported on 3" X 1" batten topped and tailed with strips of 12mm ply about 3" wide. The ply tops to these supports also provide the method of joining the various baseboards together. I'll take a photo of that later, if I can, to make it clearer. Now nearly every time I load pictures something goes awry so I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't lose the lot so may do this in two or more posts. ... They are very good. I got a sample yard of his G3 track parts recently to have a look at the scale and the combined sleeper/chair mouldings looked good and the track went together very easily. He also does gauge widened sleeper/chair units for the relatively sharper radii found in the larger scales. I've decided to go for the smaller 1:32 scale (accurate G1) and I'm intending experimenting with his sleeper/chair units to build Caledonian interlaced turnouts. I suspect that I might have to resort to battens to hold things together- maybe using something like 1mm thick styrene strip. Jim. Thanks to Martin and the various updates to Templot, I think I've arrived at a basic mimic diagram. Basic, in terms of track layout, but there is still much to add in way of text to identify led positions, possible switch positions and route identities. I followed all of Martin's notes and have arrived at a ...
