Hi Andrew, There's no way of knowing precisely what an OS surveyor did in 1930, but whatever it was they seem to have done the same again in 1958. I don't have that book, but I found this 1958 photo online: moretonhampstead.jpg?w =768 linked from http://chasewaterstuff.wordpress.com/2011/01/06/some-early-lines-the-moretonhampstead-and-south-devon-railway/ I will do some perspective correction on it and see what measurement the 6ft way seems to be.
