The Olympic torch was being relayed from Cairns, in our far north, to Melbourne. The coastal road in those days was quite primitive. Much of it wasn't sealed and the townships were a long way apart. The Olympic Committee persuaded all the small towns to organise runners. The only stipulation then was that youcould run a five minute mile while carrying a two pound weight.There were plenty of volunteers, but Army escorts still had to run with the torch in the more remote places.
