... topic: 2936 Changing closure distance posted: 24 Oct 2016 14:35 from: Dave Phillips I am trying to make a custom turnout template to match turnouts already built in a custom fixture. I need to increase the distance between the switch heel and the frog without changing the frog angle and thus increase the closure radius. It's a straight switch, regular V crossing turnout. There does not appear to be any built-in functions to do this with a mouse action, so I've been working with partial templates. The approach I've been thinking of is to make four partial templates, the switch, the frog, and straight plain track main road closure and a curved plain track turnout side closure. I've got the frog by blanking to the entry straight, but can't figure out how to blank from the switch heel to the end of the turnout. I can blank out from the toe end to the the heel but not from the heel to the exit end of the turnout. I'd really like to do this with a single template since ...

With 30 turnouts to make in the new year its worth a bit of investigation Have anyone ever tried milling them ?, nickel sliver at this dimension is not easy to hold, but the cutter can take the material away very slowly Last edited on 9 Dec 2015 13:29 by madscientist posted: 9 Dec 2015 14:06 from: David R There are many ways to skin a cat. ... up to mischief? Never!! I've actually been following this thread with interest because I've been doing some very light milling (1.3mm slot cutter) with the Proxxon TBM-220 pillar drill and the KT-70 coordinate table (loco gearboxes, oddly enough!). But today, I took delivery of a vertical slide for my Unimat 4, so I'm getting a better idea of what I might be able to do with it. posted: 7 Dec 2007 01:52 from: Brian McK Just dug out my fixture for milling vees for a hasty photo. Hope it is self explanatory as I won't be about for a day or two to answer questions. A small diameter (and easily sharpened) fly-cutter is passed through the notch in the vertically standing fixture with rails clamped at both sides. Left hand and right hand crossing vees are accommodated by grooves in both ends of the fixture. Only one crossing angle is provided per jig. O.T. That's one very tidy Bridgeport in the photo along with a youthful Martin. Did ...

Flatbottom track is becoming more popular in Model Railway circles and the choices are somewhat limited. Whilst I don't think such as Pandrol type ones would work, there are a myriad of other designs to choose from, some indeed being prominent other than in the UK. I think something like Heyback chairs (think that's correct name) would work quite well (even used in the UK as well as Germany etc and quite a long period of usage). Only one make of rail to deal with as far as I'm ...

... it was generally accepted practice on the prototype to cut either the stock rail or check rail foot back to allow the correct gap. I'd rather use code 70 FB (Peco IL-70) but as it stands the foot is too wide for my purposes. I was hoping to go to North Wales this year and take a few more detailed photos of FR track, but that plan has been well and truly scuppered! ... in essence, the graphics card is mounted upside down! What is meant by this is, that due to the fixed vertical position of the motherboard (which cannot be changed) mounted on the one side of the box, the graphics card can only be fitted horizontally with the component side (containing the chip heat-sink) facing downwards, therefore all the heat generated does not dissipate towards the tips of the heat-sink ridges, but tends to rise back towards the chip (clearly not a well thought out box fixture, mechanically speaking). I then decided to perform more zooming checks with the side plate off the box, again the result was the same, the system crashed each time. I even sat near to the unit blowing air onto the graphics card with my mouth to see if that improved things, it did not. I am now left in the same quandary as Martin, I don't know if it's chip over heating or the amount of graphics memory that is on my card. It could be either, but I ...

... straight template off-plan, and then use the align function to replace each of your track plan templates with a copy of it. If you want to copy Andy's Proto87 templates exactly, I suggest having them on-screen as a picture shape and shoving the timbers to match. You can get the lead length to match exactly using the action> mouse actions: real> adjust V-crossing entry straight mouse action. Bear in mind that most of your templates are curved, including some on transitions, whereas Andy's assembly fixtures are all straight. Alternatively you can enter the data directly from the AREA* dimensions. I have full details of those here, but no time at present to do detailed templates, sorry. If you want to change all the plain track rail lengths and tie spacings, you can do that in one go using the modify on rebuild functions. *for those wondering, that's the American Railroad Engineering Association. regards, Martin. posted: 26 Feb 2011 09:41 from: BruceNordstrand Hi Martin Thanks for the explanations ...

... Jun 2012 19:10 from: Brian Nicholls Hi Howard, Many thanks for your response, it was the intention and hope that it may help some members, as I noted over the past months, a number of members seemed to be confused about making slips, even though there is Martins brilliant video available to guide them through the process. I just felt, perhaps a straight forward written and illustrated document might just tip the balance a little. Regarding your question, I had purposely not covered the timbering and hence chair fixtures, because it can be quite a minefield with all the different company PW practices on that subject. Also, I wanted to keep the size of the document to something that would be acceptable to others, I know when I first started to write it, I was putting in every baby step, but soon realised that the document would end up much too large for comfort, so made the choice to compromise and try to keep it fairly short. This bye the way, is something I very much appreciate is Martins ...

I agree about making it work in model form but on the real thing, they are/ were only used where the "Branch" road was very infrequently used compared to the Main, and on LUL the most common situation is for over-run sidings which are "never" intended to be used. So you could model one as a fixture for that circumstance. ... Martin. Hi Martin, That's not good. Sounds like you are paying a lot of money for the supplier to build the printer in a nice case. I suspect the double extruder arrangement would only work if you were printing something with a small X dimension. I suppose you could try orienting a piece of track along the Y axis to see if that might work. I've considered using two printers with different nozzles. One to print the timbers and the other to print the chairs, but that would require some reliable indexing fixture. I think it might be possible to transfer the glass plate with the timbers still attached to the "fine" nozzle printer, but it would have to be done quickly before the glass cooled down too much.
