... through the crossing. So that's 2 x 2.3,+ 0.6= 5.2. Plus a bit= 5.5mm MIN wheel width. Assuming wheels have been set to 40mm back-to-back nominal, this is likely to vary a bit on existing models. And some wheels may have a flange thickness a bit more than 1.5mm. So let's make the back-to-flange dimension 41.7mm MAX. It is essential that this should be a MAX. This dimension also becomes the minimum check gauge, and adding the flangeway gap gives us the minimum track gauge. So track gauge= 41.7m+ 2.3= 44.0mm MIN. And the check span is 41.7mm- 2.3mm= 39.4. Plus some freedom in the tolerancing= 39.5mm MAX. Then choose a flange curving allowance, for which I suggest 0.3mm. So that finally gives a minimum back-to-back of 39.5+ 0.3= 39.8mm. MIN. Summarising all that, I suggest: WHEELS: Wheel Width 5.5mm MIN. Flange Thickness 1.9mm MAX. Back-to-Flange: 41.7mm MAX. ...

However, when I zoom in very close for alignment purposes, and try to manipulate the control template, it crashes the system. Without the large background file loaded, Templot works fine right up to, and including the largest zoom factors, it is only when I have the large file version of background on the workpad does the problem occur. Please note, if I use smaller background files, these do not seem to give rise to the problem, which suggests that there may be a file size limitation for background images which allows zooming very close in. When the crash occurs, the screen goes totally black for several seconds, then a blue screen appears with a message on, this blue screen lasts for a few seconds only (not really enough time to read it all), then the system goes into reset/restart mode and fires up the O S again thus having to start from scratch. For normal track you might want to make a less obvious joint to the underside of the switch blades. The TOU is made from Plastikard strip, a bit of 4mm PCB turnout timbering and some brass tube to be not too tight a fit on the brass wire. On my plan the positions of the tracks are already defined, and the crossover needs to fit into what's already there. The attached picture shows what I was starting from. So what you should have said is that you were working with 150ft radius curves. Or even 2.1/2 chains radius. A chain is 66ft, so that would be 165ft. If you are making turnouts at that sort of radius, I suggest using a 9ft straight switch with maybe 1:4.5 crossing angle -- which gives a radius in 00 gauge of 633mm, or 746mm in P4 (if curviform or generic). In P4 therefore you might shorten it to 1:4, giving a radius of 588mm. On the prototype turnouts as short as these would only ever be found in cramped yards and sidings, not on running lines. Your challenge now is to do it all again, but this time on a through curve. Keep an eye on the radii when curving turnouts, you may very likely need to use longer ones on ...
