... topic: 3214 Changes in 218d posted: 9 Feb 2018 17:58 from: Martin Wynne Here's a list of the changes in 218d: 1. I have made some changes to improve screen performance when zooming in and panning on a large track plan. See: topic 3207 How much difference it makes will vary with different systems and screen sizes. You may see no difference, or a big difference. On smaller track plans you probably won't see much difference. 2. There is a new option to restrict the number of background templates being shown on the screen when zooming out. Again this may or may not make a significant difference to the screen response. See the above topic link for more details. 3. I have re-written the code for the make return curve function. I was never entirely happy with its working, and it was often annoying that it wouldn't work on transition curves. It does now. At the same time I have adopted a non-standard way of working for that function. Instead of putting ...

But customers liked it and always came back for more. The narrower flangeways made it look much finer than any other 00 pointwork. At that time they were using only "scale 00" wheels -- mostly white-metal kits with Romford wheels and axles. The running of such wheels on "EM minus 2" pointwork proved to be a big improvement on the alternative BRMSB standard (00-BF) -- not surprising when you do the arithmetic. There was no thought at that time of using "EM minus 2" for RTR stock. RTR was much too coarse at the time, nearly all serious 00 modellers would re-wheel it with Romford if they used any RTR at all. When I was developing Templot I remembered "EM minus 2", so I included it in the gauge list, and gave it the name 00-SF (" ...

At present the template number simply represents its position in the storage box list, so the number changes as templates are inserted, deleted, etc., or the list is re-ordered on the storage box. This can be confusing when printing templates at different times because the template numbers (the prefix on the timber numbers) may have changed. I've allowed this situation to develop because I'm very aware of the deficiencies in Templot as a proper software product -- especially with regard to the confusing mess the user documentation is in. New users have been starting with the 10-year-old version 074b, despite the availability of much improved later versions, simply because 074b is the only version with a reasonably full set of user docs. But I've reached the end of my tether in trying to explain this over and over again in emails to users, despite the fact that it is fully explained in my order confirmation letter. If we carry on as we are I shall be ill. There is simply no way in the short term that I can find the time to update and re-write all the docs and tutorials, which would be necessary to ...

These days you need to be a better typist due to the length of the variable names (thank goodness for tab complete!). I think there may be a number of opportunities to improve performance of some of the computations. It all depends on the frequency these are called- but you mentioned that was 'many many times', so maybe. Some compilers can do these things for you, but others aren't that clever or are at least more conservative hence don't. That can be especially true when dealing with 'global variables'. In the HPC (High Performance Computing) arena optimizing computational code is really important (spent almost 20 years in this space). As computers are generally seen as 'fast', ...
