... topic: 3270 Fishbolt holes in check rails- defective timbers posted: 13 May 2018 00:32 from: Rob Manchester 2_121355_050000000.jpg Note fish-bolt holes in end of check rail Hi Martin, Paying attention as always I noticed your note for me relating to the fishplate holes. Would you care to explain the existence of the holes in this position? Re-use of old/worn running rails would seem to be the only reason I can think of and then they would only appear in a small number of check rails. If that is the case you would think that the ends of old running rails would have been cut off prior to re-use as that part of the rail would be subject to the most wear. I guess it wouldn't actually matter that the rail head was worn down as when functioning as check rails there isn't any contact with the rail top surface. ... topic: 2208 Template name labels posted: 1 May 2013 12:03 from: Martin Wynne The code for the template name labels has remained unchanged for years. By now there must be thousands of templates all called "no-name" -- which on the face of it doesn't make a lot of sense. I've felt for a long time that this area needed changing, without knowing quite what to do about it. Following this recent discussion by Richard and Arthur: topic 370- message 14648 I have been giving it some more thought. I've made some changes for the next program update, although I'm still not entirely sure it is an improvement. Maybe it is just change for change's sake. At present the template number simply represents its position in the storage box list, so the number changes as templates are inserted, deleted, etc., or the list is re-ordered on the storage box. This can be confusing when printing templates at different times because the template numbers (the prefix on the timber numbers) may ...

... topic: 3155 Changes in 217a posted: 13 Dec 2017 23:00 from: Martin Wynne A summary of the main changes in 217a: 1. There is a new minimum menu option for the turnout-road exit length: 2_131530_190000000.png Previously it was necessary to set adjustable and manually reduce it to the minimum. Now it is a single click. There is an existing peg position for this when pegging on the next template -- TMINP. 2. The main-road side now has a similar set of options: 2_131534_440000000.png and two new corresponding peg positions MMINP and MEXITP: 2_131538_430000000.png In addition there is a new mouse action for adjusting the main-road exit length: 2_131540_240000000.png Unfortunately there are no spare keyboard shortcuts available for this, it will be necessary to use the menu. These main-road functions won't be needed very often, because the main-road exit is normally set via the overall template length. But they will be useful on occasions, for example where it is required for the main-road radius to change beyond ...

... topic: 2031 Running without internet access posted: 26 Jul 2012 09:30 from: John Clutterbuck I have aware that TDV used to check the internet connection on startup and I could see the sense in this as it evolved. However, I also recall a statement that the final Templot 2 version would not do this. The latest version seems to me to becoming a more official Templot 2 version but it still includes the internet check on startup. I also note this is covered in the T&Cs. Whilst I agree that we should all be using the latest version the inability to run without an internet connection is very limiting. I often work away from home and with evenings spare and no model to work on, it is one of the best opportunities for me to do design work. Unfortunately I often stay in places without free internet access. I would like to suggest that if Templot cannot confirm it is the latest option at least it should give the user the opportunity to continue working with it. This would perhaps overcome the ...

In templot we can set rail lengths to produce standard panels of plain track. We can specify switch lengths and crossings corresponding to REA and some pre-REA specs, but can we specify the rail length used to make up a turnout? The straight stockrails of the C9's I'm making a crossover from appear to arrive with a joint approximately along with the joint for the switches and another a scale 60' further along the exit road. What would the lengths of blank rail supplied to a P-way yard/manufacturer be? I know 30'/45'/60' is a common measurement for plain track panels, but in what lengths was fresh plain rail supplied? ... topic: 321 Using Steel Rail- long term implications? posted: 22 Jan 2008 17:09 from: Brian Tulley Hi all, Whilst realising there are many "for" and "against" voters for Steel Rail I'm pretty much in the "for" category (hypothetically, because I've never actually tried it). However, I recently heard that a Mr. Norman Solomon wasn't so keen on Steel Rail, preferring Nickel Silver instead. Apparently this is because he has found past problems with soldered joints eventually failing. Bearing in mind that I am contemplating Ply& rivet construction (dinosaur I know) which does have several soldered joints here and there, I was wondering what experiences others have found with regard to long term reliability of soldered joints with steel rail? Fortunately the layout will be located in (what was) a bedroom, so corrosion etc. won't be too much of an issue I hope. Many thanks. I'm just getting into rail modelling, though I do have a fair amount of experience modelling other subjects. Right from the start, I wanted to model my local station, which was demolished when I was two years old. The station was a branch of the LYR from Middleton Junction to Middleton. I've spent about 6 months on research so far (having no previous knowledge of railways), and over that time, my ambition has grown somewhat. I'm currently thinking I'll be modelling in 2FS with hand built permanent way. This will be a very long term project, involving kit and scratch building locos and stock, and, first thing, fitting out my garage as a suitable space. The garage refit is actually progressing, and I've acquired a couple of donor chasses for locos, so I'm starting to think it may actually ...

I have been following the 1:2500 OS map where it seems the surveyor has set out the running lines, Up& Down Main and Up& Down Relief other than with the Templot selected track spacing. The lines were slightly curved through the station and past the yard, as shown in photographs, but then all 4 lines straightened out. The plan I am working to is attached.
