... topic: 752 Saving user preferences posted: 5 Mar 2009 09:28 from: Martin Wynne Dear all, Bruce Wilson wrote: However, I do like the suggestion made of having Templot remember the last user settings. OK, I give in. I have never understood the importance of saving user preferences. I seldom use the same ones twice, and compared with an hour on Templot and hundreds or even thousands of mouse clicks in a session, half a dozen clicks at the start to change a few settings seem insignificant. Especially compared with the great advantage of starting from a known repeatable condition every time -- which also makes it much easier for me to provide user support. But I've been asked for saved preferences so often that I give in. In the next pug I will include the option to save some of your settings. But I need to know which ones -- I can't do every single thing that might be changed in Templot (although I can add more in each subsequent pug). So if you would like ...

So the first question is -- are your chairs in a format which will import into Templot using the existing DXF import function (in the background shapes)? Is it possible you could send me, or attach here, a DXF file containing just one of your chairs? I can then experiment with getting Templot to include it in the DXF export. Preferably the file would be in the DXF text format, rather than binary, so that I can read it. I can probably convert it if not. What I'm still very hazy about is how we get from a drawing in TurboCAD to something a 3D printer can use? I've been reading that the STL format is many years old, dating from before 3D printers became generally available, and is generally regarded as too low in resolution for them? Are you able to have mouseover prompts for the menu when a user clicks on a background template? A quick prompt as to the use of the make, copy and delete etc may be handy before a beginner ends up with no templates left in the storage box( or duplicate copies of some). Just a thought- you could maybe have a prompt 'off' setting savable in stored preferences. Keep plodding through- the docs/videos will make a huge difference to Templot. In the classic Templot mode, everything will continue to work exactly as it does now, with the addition of the make the control menu option which will often be a useful time saver. I have given these new modes the PageUp and PageDown shortcuts so that experienced users can quickly swap modes if they wish. (These shortcuts were previously on the little-used zoom-free option.) The new make on click mode will be the default (unless you set your preferences otherwise) and will I think address some of the concerns of new users and make Templot track planning work in a way more similar to many Windows programs. It will of course be a damn nuisance when building complex formations from multiple partial templates, and I fully expect experienced users to switch back to the classic Templot mode for such work. And probably much else. The much bigger downside for me is that it renders hundreds of tutorial screenshots and thousands of video frames even more out of date than they are already. ...
