... of S&C up to 1,200 long were made up and sometimes laid as one piece. Baseboards are graded softwood framed and quite heavily constructed (will take my 6 ft weight without groaning) with 9mm marine ply covering glued and screwed down. Track base is 3mm sheet cork glued to the ply with Copydex, track is glued on to the cork again with Copydex. Overall alignment was achieved by spending two whole days very accurately drawing a 100mm centres grid over the entire baseboard and using this to position the Templot printouts for all the track. This allowed me to build different parts knowing it would all link up perfectly, thus I was able to build and lay all the S&C before the plain line. Electrical connections are via 0.7mm brass droppers soldered to brass shims under the rails and to the sides of the rails to represent a chair. ... same as the centre overhang. In 0 gauge this came to 14mm. I had set my track centre's at an overscale 90mm as opposed to a scale 80mm, on purpose and we found that there was still about 6mm of clearance between two similar vehicles on the bend. The same can be done by printing out a few templates, cutting a piece of plasticard to the shape of a coach and drilling 3mm holes at the bogie centres. You can then use these holes to sight through onto the track centre lines on the printout. Hope this is helpful. ... modifications anyway. On a small shunting plank layout, things might look different. It makes Templot look silly if it says you need 7 yards of plain track, and you end up with 2 yards over. The strange thing is, after being involved in model railways for half a century, I don't remember ever wanting to know the total length of track on a layout in any detail -- otherwise such a function would have been in Templot from the start. It's easy enough to drop a ruler on the full plan printout and come up with an approximate total if needed. Most modellers who hand-build track keep rail and other track materials in stock and when they run out they order some more based on the usual pack quantities from the supplier, rather than an exact measurement from the immediate layout plan. If you end up with an unwanted surplus, there is usually a friend or fellow club member happy to buy it off you -- or more likely someone wants you to build some track for them, and you end up buying ...

This would give you guide marks for the chairs. I will look at adding such "chair-alignment" marks on the square-on timbering option -- thanks for the suggestion. And if the chair outlines were also included then we'd know if we needed 12" or 14" timbers to accommodate all the fixings. Templot's printouts show only the rail and timber positions, without any chairing detail. There is too much prototype variation in chair patterns to make this practical -- you need to refer to your chosen prototype. For a guide to the common REA chair types and positions, detailed templates can be downloaded and printed from the Exactoscale web site, and scaled to any size. These three turnouts gave me a chance to use the Portsdown Models Crossing Vee and Switch Rail planing jigs for the first time and everything went smoothly though it pays to have good quality files such as the swiss files we use from Shesto. The turnouts were built directly onto Templot printouts which had been taped onto a flat surface. The layout was dismantled whilst the turnouts were being built and, whilst I was sort of confident that there would be no issues, it was nonetheless very satisfying to see they fitted perfectly in their intended positions when Mostyn was put up. The only 'b*ggering about' was to move the turnout actuation from directly beneath the trackwork to a position that was clear of the baseboard supporting framework.
