... topic: 166 Next Steps, laying track on a printed template posted: 21 Sep 2007 03:07 from: Rextanka I think I'm reaching the point where track can be laid on my baseboards. I have some baseboards and a printout of the track. My initial thoughts are that I would seal the baseboards with varnish or paint, then glue down closed cell foam with PVA, and glue the template on top of this. Once that is done, glue copperclad on the template for sleepers and start ballasting. Then start soldering rail to the copper clad. But I have concerns about this. My templates are printed on an inkjet printer. Does the PVA distort the template. Any other suggestions? Thanks! Nick posted: 21 Sep 2007 03:36 from: Martin Wynne Hi Nick, But I have concerns about this. My templates are printed on an inkjet printer. Does the PVA distort the template. I appear to have written four times on this subject over the years: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/templot/ ...

... correct for shrinkage. This ratio was determined in Templot by trial and error, using the ruler against the scaling bar of the background image and also measuring a known proto distance on the plan background image. Plan size (from original Tiff file): approx. 62" x 27" I say approx because when I had a print taken from the original file which was supposed to be 1:1, the local printer appears to have printed it just a tad under 1:1 so these dimensions were taken from that printout copy as an approximation. I have attached a PDF file named: error_report_09_02_2011.pdf which contains all the on screen messages, including the blue screen message photo art the time of the crash. Also if it would help, I can send you the system mini-dump files generated when the crashes occurred, please let me know if these are needed. I can only say, that apart from this annoying problem, I still think Templot is an excellent and very useful software package for designing track-work, probably the best ...

... , There isn't a calibration function for the PDF output, as the file may be printed on different printers at different times. Also, for printing at a commercial print shop it's difficult and expensive to make lots of test and proof prints. However, if you know the amount of error, you can enlarge or reduce the output accordingly and create a fresh PDF file, at output> enlarge/reduce size for print and PDF> set any% ... menu item. It's very difficult to measure a long roll printout with great accuracy, so measure the grid lines over a shorter length, say about 500mm. That output size setting changes both the width and length. To change the length and width independently, if you are feeling brave you may like to experiment with the data distortions. These are legacy functions from the early days of Templot -- I haven't looked at them for years, and I imagine few others have done so. If you make any settings you must reload your .box file afterwards. Also the grid is not ...

... topic: 1741 Printing a Background Shape posted: 20 Dec 2011 22:11 from: Ian H Hi I have a 40ft to 1 inch GWR plan which I have as a background shape Luckily I have a large plotter at work which I can use, and what I would like to do is printout the templot plan and the background shape as one print out. I then can place it on to the baseboards which I can lay the track to, but it would also give me the position of the buildings, platform, etc Is there a way to print the Templot template and the background shape together? Thanks Ian posted: 20 Dec 2011 22:19 from: Martin Wynne Hi Ian, back_scan2.png 1. Page outlines (here as orange/black dotted lines) being adjusted for best fit. ... topic: 1640 [Q] Very simple question posted: 25 Sep 2011 19:54 from: radiopaque Hi all, It's almost embarrassing, but... how can I change the project title? Changing a template's name is no problem, but this incorrect name keeps ending up on my printouts :-) Cheers Mark posted: 25 Sep 2011 20:36 from: Martin Wynne radiopaque wrote: how can I change the project title? Hi Mark, session> project title... on the program panel, or edit> box title... on the storage box. Note that you should change it after loading any current .box files, not before. Otherwise it would be reset by the title contained in the .box file. ... pdf. Mark a grid on the print of known dimension (my preference would be to mark a grid that represents 1ft in the model) and then re-scan as a PNG/BMP. The grid can then be used, when scaling the image in TEMPLOT, as the guide to getting the size correct. Alan posted: 20 Sep 2011 14:59 from: Tony W Hi Alan. Just goes to prove the old addage there is more than one way to skin a cat. Drawing a grid on the printout is all well and good if you can work out the scale in the first place. Most maps, such as OS maps normally have a grid printed on them often at 100 metres these days for the larger scale ones and that is a great help, however this was indiscernable on my maps, so it was a bit of a guessing game. About the only know dimension was the track gauge as there were not even two quarter mile posts marked on one map to use as a starting point. If you are ...

... topic: 1633 Quick Intro: Nit picking posted: 17 Sep 2011 14:24 from: Glen Suckling Hi Martin This is really insignificant but I thought that I would mention it anyway. The quick intro has two pages in its panel. However, when printing, page one actually prints as two pages. The printout therefore consists of three pages numbered 1, [unnumbered] and 2. Glen posted: 17 Sep 2011 15:20 from: Martin Wynne Hi Glen, Thanks. Your printer is simply overlapping to a new page because it won't all fit on one page. This depends on the text size and the paper sheet size. You can change the text size by clicking the change text size link at the bottom of each page. If you set about 80%, the first page will probably fit on a single sheet. Or alternatively use a larger paper size. At present the printed text size is probably a bit too big. I will get all this fine-tuned when there is a bit more Quick Intro content ...

... functions work, there are plenty of tutorials to show you how to do this. Finally for now, I mentioned the short cut keys earlier. Left click the help drop down menu and you will see several options, the top one is worthwhile reading and further down are to lines that say Show shortcut keys list and Print F key chart. It is suprising just how many templot users seem to be unaware of these. The best investment you can make is in a ring binder and some plastic wallets to to file the printouts in. As Martin points out Templot itself has many help screens built into it and I have printed out many of these as they contain much useful information. Hope you can successfully follow this. ... myths. Now I'm making a diamond and wonder about a similar issue at the centre of it, where the stock rail and check rail curve to form the angle of the obtuse crossing. It seems that on the prototype these rails curved quite gently- at least on the 1: 7.5 crossing I'm making. Someone on the Scalefour Forum sent a picture of a drawing for this area- here it is. 3591_091212_270000000.png The radius is marked, roughly track gauge, extending over a greater length than the sleeper width. Meanwhile the printout from my Templot template shows a curve, but not one as long and gentle as that, though it is difficult to say where it begins and ends- just the useful thing about the three marks on turnout acute crossings. 3591_091216_190000000.jpg Here is a screenshot of the Templot trackpad for the same thing, showing a crisp bend. 3591_091213_080000000.png So I'm wondering a few things about this. First, is there a good modelling reason not to emulate the prototype? Dave Bradwell on the Scalefour Forum suggested that making the knuckle bend crisp ...
