... request, you have created a 3 way turnout in the wrong area. It is the group of 3 parallel sidings at the top of the track plan to which I was referring, although having said that the alterations you made in what is the locomotive servicing area of the plan may well be worth incorporating in the plan. Many thanks for your input so far. Best wishes, Dave Yates posted: 13 Aug 2014 17:10 from: Brian Nicholls Hi Dave, Is this what you are looking for? I have produced a 3 way tandem to the upper sidings. Please note I have left all your original templates in the box file so you will need to have a clear out when you have completed. ... of the turnout? Thank you, Richard. Hi Richard, I've been looking at your yard turnout. If you make a double slip from it you can see what happens to the timbering and switches in that case. I've copied your turnout and turned into a double slip, parked below the turnout. This shows that that equalised incremental timbering seems a good way go. I'm sure that if there was already a standard way of doing things it would have been used elsewhere. Box file attached. By the way, to produce the switches, I extend the main line, F4, and split it off. Put a turnout in the split off length and reduce it until you only have the switch or switches left. Then use 'Snake through the peg', Ctrl F6, to slide the switches along until they are where you want them. At the same time you can remove the unwanted switch and stock rail if its a single blade catch point. In the same way, the switch in the diverging road can be produced by using 'Make ...

From photographs, I have noticed that they had interlaced sleepers between the switches and crossings, but used timbers under these. Some time ago a 1:8 NER interlaced turnout template was made available, but practices differ, althoguh it can be used as a starting point. (Pardon the pun- it was unintentional.) My primary interest is to suit a branchline in the late Edwardian era, so I suspect the practice would be that current some 15-20 years earlier. There is a new option setting to control the image rendering quality. design quality is fast and intended for use while you are working on your layout design. display quality is much slower but produces a more pleasing final result for display purposes when creating images for publication, exhibition display, web sites, printed pages, etc. The intention is that you should do most of your design work in design quality, and switch to display quality only to produce the final output. I think it is fair to say that many modellers building their own track in this scale would use the 2mm finescale standards rather than commercial N Gauge -- that of course has implications for RTR rolling stock conversions, wheel changing, etc. I would be doubtful that stripping components from Peco turnouts would produce very successful hand-built track, but making your own track parts really isn't difficult with a few jigs and tools. Two obvious starting points for you are: 1. The 2mm Scale Association. In this instance, I have a need to build some GWR paling fencing (the type with vertical uprights); in 4mm one can just use Ratio, but in 3mm this isn't an option, and using the 4mm stuff looks wrong. If you think about it, such fences in outline look just like track, with sleepers representing the vertical bits and rail the horizontal battens. So, my intention is to produce a template of such fencing which can act as a guide to building some. As well as plain fencing, it should be possible to produce templates for such things as gates, which would enable one to produce a complete bespoke plan to fit a given site. I actually only need a fairly short section, which includes two types of gate. I haven't yet found definitive measurements for everything, but using the 4mm Ratio stuff and Great Western Way as a guide, the vertical bits seem to be about 3" wide ...

There is a three-way tandem (they seem to be in fashion at the moment, although I've taken heed of all the advice) I need to finish- its just overlayed right and left hand templates at the moment. When I get everything just right I'll put the V crossings in the right place and play with partial templates to produce the definitive template. This can be done using the standard template and provides a nice smooth progress through the frog. I have done this on my Long Preston layout where there are some very long crossings in the entrance trackage to the fiddle yard. I got into templot becasue a friend of mine produced the template for the trackwork on templot and I then made it as a switched frog. I was so impressed that I went and bought templot myself and ahve never regretted it. If you are interested I could post some photos of the frogs. So they increased the scale. Which is why commercial toy models of British locomotives in ALL scales use underscale track. To return to the discussion, OO isn't primarily a scale. I'm not quite sure how you would remove the BGS functions completely, as users will require to add in a background track plan (map, drawing etc), these are clearly very essential to the guidance for their layouts.
