... topic: 321 Using Steel Rail- long term implications? posted: 22 Jan 2008 17:09 from: Brian Tulley Hi all, Whilst realising there are many "for" and "against" voters for Steel Rail I'm pretty much in the "for" category (hypothetically, because I've never actually tried it). However, I recently heard that a Mr. Norman Solomon wasn't so keen on Steel Rail, preferring Nickel Silver instead. Apparently this is because he has found past problems with soldered joints eventually failing. Bearing in mind that I am contemplating Ply& rivet construction (dinosaur I know) which does have several soldered joints here and there, I was wondering what experiences others have found with regard to long term reliability of soldered joints with steel rail? Fortunately the layout will be located in (what was) a bedroom, so corrosion etc. won't be too much of an issue I hope. Many thanks. ... topic: 662 Admin: Photos on Yahoo posted: 16 Dec 2008 14:56 from: Martin Wynne Dear all, Just a reminder for recent new members that we still have a Yahoo group annexed to this Templot Club site. It's well worth joining the Yahoo group to gain access to the Photos and Files sections. (Unfortunately unlike the message archive, Yahoo don't permit open access to these sections.) Yahoo have recently made some improvements to the Photos section. We now have a massive 100GB of storage space (effectively unlimited -- we have yet to scratch the surface of it), and pictures can now be displayed in their original uploaded size, no matter how large. There's some interesting stuff accumulated there over the past 8 years -- many thanks to everyone who uploaded it. If you haven't visited the Photos and Files sections recently, it would be worth having a look: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/templot/photos http://groups.yahoo.com/group/templot/files Here are a couple of example ...

... topic: 173 Are you using Vista? posted: 23 Sep 2007 21:16 from: Martin Wynne Dear all, I'm desperately trying not to have to buy Windows Vista( ), but I need some help. Initially there were several reports of Templot running fine on Vista. But recently I have had some reports of problems, and reading the Vista docs it seems that I ought to be making some changes to the installer program. So I would be grateful for some feedback. Are you using Templot on Vista? If so, any problems? Which version of Templot are you using? Did you install 074b first and then a later Pug, or did you just install the Pug and create your own shortcuts? Do any strange messages appear from Windows or Microsoft while using Templot? Does the "restore previous session" function work ok on startup? Assuming you are not using 091a (if so please upgrade to 091b), have you had any difficulty saving files to the default location( C:\TEMPLOT\BOX-FILES ...

I'm beginning to despair that it ever will. I've written about this problem several times before, but I'm no nearer a solution. In recent months I have been able to spend almost no time at all on program development. All my Templot time has been spent on user support, not only on here but also on RMweb and elsewhere, and in emails. I recently turned 60, and I'm getting genuinely worried that the grey cells will fail on me before I can get everything done in Templot that I want to do. Already there are areas of the code which were crystal clear when I wrote them 20 years ago, but are now getting distinctly foggy ...

This approach would hopefully avoid my needing to spend considerable time learning about the niceties of Templot, instead I could get on with layout construction etc before moving on to track building. I am now at the stage where I need to practice track building (having no experience in this area to date) ready for a start on the real trackwork for TG. As a member of two Scalefour Society area groups I recently took along a suitable baseframe and Templot print section in the hope of canvassing opinion for a test track build 2297_091103_500000000.jpg The members of the S4 area group felt that a challenging test track build was the way to go and I therefore chose the above section. This won't be used on the layout, rather I can test various methods of attaching the track to the aluminium sheet/cork baseframe and include some practice of building track on plywood baulks (as this style of trackwork will feature on the two large viaducts of TG) ...

If you are using Firefox you may want to check Tools> Add-ons to see if Microsoft have installed this extension without your permission. Please be aware that modifying the Windows Registry is not for the faint-hearted, and could seriously damage your system if you get it wrong. In a recent update of the .NET framework Microsoft silently installs an extension to your Firefox browser if it is found on your system. This extension enables websites you visit with Firefox to silently install software on your computer, thus injecting the most serious flaw of Internet Explorer into Firefox. Microsoft installs this extension in such a way that it cannot be removed directly by the user -- it is listed in the Extensions list but Uninstall is disabled. To provide an automatic save and restore function on the .bgs files will require a lot of fresh code, and yet another start-up option, so I will leave that out for now. There is a "recent files" function on the background shapes which makes it quite fast to find your current file.
