(Or perhaps you were all too polite to pull it to pieces?) Unless I get any comments and need to make any changes, I now need to start buying the bits to make my first turnout. I shall start with a simple turnout on a curve. But despite reading various postings I am still not sure exactly what I need to buy and how to use some components:- C&L recommend that I use cut-down slide chairs under the crossing nose and where the wing-rails meet. But where do you stop using conventional chairs to support the switch blade and start using slide chairs? In his tutorial, Richard Lambert mentions 6 slide chairs, but does it depend on the size of turnout that you are building?- I ...

Not an easy question to answer as there are so many variations. This topic has been touched on in several other forum enquiries. With a single turnout/ point, the standard practice for more recent times has been to put an extra full length timber after the crossing vee joint and then interleave the ends of the ordinary sleepers until the tracks diverge sufficiently for this not to matter any more. However earlier practice was to begin interleaving ordinary sleepers as soon as the special crossing chairs ended with varations in between. I guess from your earlier reply you have a method of getting round the timbering problem when you build it and if that works for you then that is all that matters. Tony. posted: 4 Feb 2012 ...

It's fine if folks want to pretend that it's a model of 4ft-8.5in track, but it can't actually be that and still be called 00 Gauge. I changed the designation of 00-SF to 4-SF in Templot for exactly that reason -- 00 Gauge means a specific thing, and 00-SF wasn't it. regards, Martin. posted: 23 Sep 2017 03:12 from: Andrew Barrowman This is my most recent visually enhanced attempt. By messing around with the aspect ratio of the ballast rectangle formed between the sleepers and the rails as well as the mark/space ratio between the sleepers and the ballast the gauge appears "stretched". But you can't get too greedy or you end up with H0. It's not impossible that Peco considered doing something along similar lines, but as they had to invest a considerable amount in tooling I think they were wise to stick with the original 00 dimensions. 2983_222154_580000000.jpg posted: 23 Sep 2017 04 ...

... topic: 1840 Ballasting Track posted: 21 Feb 2012 00:23 from: Dellboy I have recently come across a different approach to ballasting insitu track. It uses resinal powdered adhesive (e.g. Cascamite) mixed dry with the ballast at a ratio about 3 or 4 ballast to 1 adhesive. The ballast and powder mix is spread and levelled on your track, then sprayed with a water/IPA mix. This wets the ballast and the adhesive. Apparently ideal for ballasting S&C since there is slight shrinkage as it dries. It's worse than PVA in producing concrete slab-track. Also, it's important that the correct amount of water is used in the mix. If too much is added, or more is added after the setting reaction has begun, it may never set properly and remain permanently sticky. For ballasting, ...
