... 3051 Direct loading of background maps posted: 23 Jul 2017 03:21 from: Martin Wynne Edit: please read all through this topic for up-to-date information. It describes the development process of this function, and the first messages do not necessarily represent the finished program. Well that was fun. How much actual use can be made of it remains to be seen. Lots of folks like to use maps as a background guide to their track planning. But it's not always straightforward to capture and merge multiple screenshots from the mapping web sites, and scale them accurately to match the model scale. So I thought it would be useful if Templot could load maps directly from the server. That way the map can be as large as you like, within reason, and Templot can do the scaling to your model scale automatically. The big fly in that ointment is the copyright and licensing restrictions on most mapping and aerial imagery web sites. But that doesn't apply to OpenStreetMap (OSM), so I have had a go at loading ...

Appreciate it may not be easy but if you could take a look, I would be grateful. Cheers Godders posted: 14 Feb 2014 20:18 from: Martin Wynne Hi Godders, How would you see this working? I can't see an obvious way to see what's in a .box file without loading it. For new .box files we could perhaps include a screenshot of the trackpad, or a list of the storage box contents, or both, in the .box file for use by a "preview" function. And of course you can always set a meaningful file name, or put them in meaningful folders. But none of that is much help if you already have hundreds of anonymous .box files. A possible new function would be "next file" in which Templot reloads the next file in a folder on a single click or keypress? regards, Martin. posted: 14 ...

Sketchboard is based on a desktop publishing component developed by Nils Haeck in the Netherlands. I have kept it as an independent function, so that Templot users who have no interest in such things can ignore it entirely. If you don't click the Sketchboard button you will never see it. I can't believe they are all working so well first time that no one has anything to say about them. So I will confess that I'm a bit disappointed and wondering if I have taken a wrong turning. The sketchboard function took months of work and a considerable expense for the licence for the graphics engine. But only a few sketchboard screenshots have been posted here or on any other forums. Only a tiny handful of sketchboard SK9 files have been attached here for comment. Was I wasting my time? And if so, where to next? There are several extra functions I would like to add for my own use, but is Templot already too complicated for most users? It's entirely stand-alone, not connected to the internet, not networked, so it can't have updated itself in any way. I would grateful if a few users running 091c on Windows7 would post here a few screenshots of the dialogs, say the storage box or DXF dialog, so that I can compare results and see if everyone is seeing the same thing. Given that it gets set to the full screen size during start-up, that's a bit of a mystery, unless it is possible to change the Windows screen size in Parallels while a program is running? However, that works only where the resulting diamond-crossing is flatter than 1:1.5 angle. Looking at your screenshot, it seems that you may be looking for a much shorter crossing than that. In which case you would need to create it manually using multiple partial templates. Also, web video is in a state of utter confusion at present, with several formats in use on different devices. I don't want to spend many hours creating videos and then find that the chosen format is falling out of favour. So I'm trying a slideshow-lightbox format. It's intended for photo galleries, but I have modified it to show screenshots with extended notes. The advantage over video is that the user can proceed at his own pace, carefully read the notes at each stage, and replicate the operations before moving to the next stage. Also this is claimed to work on all existing formats on all devices. We'll see. If so it means you could display it on your mobile device while following the operations in Templot on your main computer. I was really wondering what changes, if any, I should be making specifically for this apparent comprehension difficulty. I can understand someone not being able to recognise the individual words, but recognising the words but not being able to extract the meaning from a string of them is a bit baffling. Does a lot more white space between paragraphs help? Narrow columns? Is it better to have lots of small individual bits of a screenshot, or one large screenshot with numbers and arrows pointing to each item? Is text on numbered callout panels on a screenshot or diagram easier to understand than plain text in paragraphs? Does a lot of text formatting (different fonts, colours, emphasis) and inline linking make it easier to understand, or become a distraction? Or are any changes a waste of time, and almost anything text-based is rejected and only full video is acceptable? The problem there is that video is so incredibly time-consuming to ...

I failed to make this clear in the notes. When the embedded browser appears it is important that its zoom setting is set to display images dot-for-dot. Otherwise Templot's size calculations for the screenshot will be wrong. This is the case when it first appears, but you need to take care not to change it. To zoom the map, make sure to use the+/- buttons on the map, or click on the map and then use the mouse wheel. That way the web site will receive the wheel activity and adjust the URL accordingly. Take care not to zoom the entire browser page by clicking off the map -- for example on the header section -- and then using Ctrl+ Wheel or the usual browser keyboard shortcuts for zooming. It can be more or less chatty, it can be dragged out, or packed into a few longer more frequent notes. The actual length of the video clips is quite short without the pauses. Also, that is just the "Templot Explained" beginners guide. There remains the rest of the Templot Companion, which is the reference section and will be mostly plain text and screenshots as before. In fact mostly updated from the previous version. So where in the videos a detailed explanation is needed, it will be a clickable link into the reference part of the the Companion. This unfortunately leads to a chicken and egg situation over which to do first. When first published the videos are likely to have such links going nowhere, but with the best will in the world I can only do so much at a time.
