For some situations a full transition curve isn't needed, and a plain tangential boundary between two curves or a curve and straight is acceptable. For example within yards and depots. I've finally got round to doing something about it -- prompted by Richard's recent request for such an option in a loco shed. It will be in the next program update. I've made a quick scruffy video: http://flashbackconnect.com/Default.aspx?id=-yIZ2yOMvSRJDrQNe4S7zw2 But when you do want a smooth transitioned link for running lines, see the usual method here: http://templot.com/companion/link_existing.php cheers, Martin. posted: 9 Aug 2019 21:26 from: Rob Manchester Hi Martin, That looks likely to be a very useful addition to Templot. The more advanced trackplans bit seems to encourage the notion of great, this is what I need to produce layout based on Manchester Piccadilly, rather than this is for designing and constructing handbuilt track from a simple turnout upwards. The approach you've indicated seems to me spot on. I'd start with a simple turnout under construction, maybe follow it with a simple formation, and then show something more complex. With the complex bit I'd restrict it to just one example, as you've only a page to fill, and otherwise an enthusiastic editor might well chuck out the simple stuff. I'd also make a point along the lines that more complex formations are not simple to design or build and require dedicated effort on the part of the builder ...

... One of life's many mysteries is why the Templot download is so much smaller than most other program downloads. It's only around 1.5MB. I've found that most other program downloads are typically 5 or 10 times larger than that. For software which seems not significantly more complex than Templot. With nearly everyone now on broadband, downloading Templot takes only a second or two, and sometimes it is so fast that you are not entirely sure that it has actually worked! The small size also gives the impression that it must be a fairly simple program -- anyone judging these matters on a megabyte-per-dollar basis must be none too impressed. So I'm pondering whether there might be a case for bulking it up with some blank space to make the download look a bit meatier and take longer. It seems a daft thing to do, and unfair to anyone still on dial-up, but I'm wondering if other software gets up to such tricks? Anyone know? Nonetheless, by proceeding in a logical sequence, one rail at a time, you never need more than two hands which is handy for me. The advantages of building a pre-fabricated assembly this way are:- 1. you can "tack" solder it together, then lift it off the jig and squint along it to check that the rails are perfectly aligned- in the event of any issue, it is simple to unsolder and adjust without singeing timbers or un-soldering previous work. 2. Having taken the assembly out of the jig, you can turn it upside down and re-solder the joints to the N/S strips- thus dealing with any dry joints which are difficult to avoid when trying to solder several rails in close proximity 3. with the assembly upside down, you can place it on a flat surface and check that the rail surfaces are ABSOLUTELY level 4. because we are cutting/ bending the rails ...

The jigs and methods mentioned here are all described in detail and illustrated in "Track How it Works and How to Model It", which is available from the Association at 2mm.org.uk. For filing crossing tapers we have simple jigs made of Tufnol very much like your jigs at the edge of the plate. Ours also have a simple clamping device which is important. With FB rail you might not need a clamp, but you would need very strong finger pressure to stop the rail moving along with the file. I also find that there is a tendency for the rail to tip sideways and this results in a skew taper. They also do not cater for switch tapers.
