... topic: 1754 Rivet& Ply Track- rivet size? posted: 30 Dec 2011 14:23 from: Richard_Jones Does anyone have any views on rivet sizes for rivet and Ply built track? EMGS offer both 2mm and 2.5mm rivets- whilst if you work in EM (like me), you need the 2.5mm rivets on the pre-punched plain sleepers, is there any reason why you shouldn't use the 2mm rivets on pointwork where you can make certain it is directly under the rail? ... topic: 3260 Total timbering lengths on trackplan posted: 19 Apr 2018 22:18 from: Rob Manchester Hi Martin, The Storage box facility to add up the total length of timbering on all or some background templates is very useful. You can group some templates( say the ones containing only plain track) to sum the sleeper lengths but templates that have S&C work inserted are mixed between two widths- such as 3.3mm/10" and 4mm/12" on an EM or P4 plan. Would it be possible in a future update( ie not now or this week/month but when you have the inclination) to show the total lengths of plain track and turnout timbering as two figures rather than rolling them into one. This would help me( and others?) in checking that sufficient materials are to hand before building comences. I realise that some scale/gauge layouts may have odd timber widths or combinations but I suspect the vast majority of plans drawn using Templot have either one width throughout or a standard plain track ...

I am even beginning to wonder whether, exceptionally, the NBR made use of timbers extending across the full width of a tandem formation. So, if anyone out there can provide me with any information about how the NBR went about timbering a tandem, it would be much appreciated. John, It's not NB but Caley and it's not a tandem, but here's a picture of a three way at Crow Road station on Glasgow showing that sleepers were used throughout. I think that there were some detail variations on NB and Caledonian practices but I'm sure that they all followed the same general rules. 25_100450_140000000.jpg A lot of pre-Grouping interlaced turnouts survived well into the BR period in Scotland- this picture was taken in 1953 and the turnout would probably have survived until the line was closed in the 1960s. I've got another picture somewhere of interlaced turnouts taken in the early 1980s in Scotland which showed that the timbers and the chairs had obviously been replaced at some time ...
