... topic: 699 Merseyside 3rd Rail Electrics posted: 17 Jan 2009 13:18 from: David Catton Hi, I'm a newbee to this list but Martin encouraged me to post this query. Does anyone know the dimensions of the sleepers used by BR LMR in the 1950s/1060s for the Merseyside area third rail electric stock? Contemporary (1950s/1060s) photos (a poor quality scan of one taken from a book is attached) confirm that asymmetric sleepers were in use in the period I am interested in but it appears that the dimensions were almost certainly different from the sleepers used by Southern Railway and presumably by BR Southern Region and currently (no pun intended!) .Any help with this would be much appreciated- or even a pointer to a relevant source of accurate information so that the Templot scheming of my proposed layout can be completed as accurately as possible. Thanks in anticipation,David Catton Attachment: attach_459_699_track001.jpg 873 posted: 19 Feb 2009 22:35 from: David Burton David I have asked several friends who work in railway civil engineering for ...

The S1J is 10" wide rather than the 8" of the standard S1. Rob posted: 24 Sep 2019 20:25 from: Martin Wynne Hi John, The use of the heavier joint chairs on wider 12" sleepers adjacent to the rail joints at each end of a track panel was common practice in the pre-group period (pre 1921). They were often used in conjunction with shorter 9" 2-hole fishplates so that the joint sleepers could be very close together, typically at 15" centres with only a 3" gap between them. The theory being that strength in the rail support was more important than strength in the fishplate. Generally the theory fell out of favour in the light of experience. Here's a list ...

... topic: 2829 Dale Junction (OOSF) posted: 21 Jan 2016 17:19 from: PeterD A little background. Previously I have constructed trackwork using copper clad sleepers but now I am building using ply sleepers and chairs. I have found this a real challenge with the small parts to thread on the rails etc. It is not as strong as copper clad and care needs to be taken when moving the trackwork to the railway layout. This led me try and build the track in situ to avoid having to move it. I used foam backed wallpaper as an underlay. I found that this did not provide and absolutely flat surface and any pressure being applied distorted the surface (e.g. when trimming chairs). Things improved after I used the proper adhesive to secure the wallpaper. I am now starting again on the Northern approach but this time I shall assemble the track work on my work bench and transfer it to the layout. I am using balsa cement to secure the sleepers to the template and a firm base to secure the templates.I ...

Some time ago a 1:8 NER interlaced turnout template was made available, but practices differ, althoguh it can be used as a starting point. (Pardon the pun- it was unintentional.) Do any templot users know of any small manufacturers who may have such a thing. I'll be using code 70 flat bottom rail. I'm hoping that tucked away is a manufacturer of narrow gauge stuff. The second questions is about methods of building trackwork. ... avoid much of the swelling problem. Tony. posted: 23 Dec 2011 16:04 from: Nigel Brown So far I've not used underlay with the current layout; it's a 1930's GWR station where you wouldn't have much of a ballast shoulder anyway. The track is constructed "off-board" in manageable segments on double-sided tape and then laid in position; the tape is usually good enough to keep it in position until ballasted, although in critical positions I've shoved P**o track pins through the odd sleeper to make sure. For much of the layout I used PVA, but then switched to matte-medium sold by Woodlands Scenics, which does seem quieter. I might try laying templates on the board and building on top of them some time. Reasons putting me off are that track building on the workbench is, I reckon, more comfortable than bending over a baseboard, and, instinctively I'm a bit suspicious of ballasting on top of a paper template. posted: 24 Dec 2011 17:03 from: Ian Allen ...

This will contain four sets of points and one single slip. It needs to represent North Eastern Railway practice c.1910/11 since it will be a dry run for the model of Leyburn station at that date I shall begin building next year when the conversion of my garage into a bespoke railway room has been completed. This means I need points with interlaced sleepers and non-standard switches- standard REA B8s, for example, just will not do. Trust me to make life difficult for myself! I can produce the plain track and shove the timbers to the appropriate places. I am not even thinking about the single slip yet, which I shall not attempt until I have completed the 'easier' parts.
