... topic: 1818 Help required with narrow gauge track posted: 7 Feb 2012 18:20 from: Hayfield Back in 2008 after a holiday next to the Festiniog railway I hankered after building a small narrow gauge layout, Based on UK stock and not using small sleepered crazy track. In 0-16.5 After a few trials, I want to use 0 gauge wooden sleepers, using either code 75 BH or 82 FB rail or like the Festiniog a mixture of both, using 00 plastic chairs. Finescale 00 wheels so it could be either 00 or 00-SF gauge I do have a copy of WHR/ Festinog turnout (see thread topic 578) but its just too large for a small layout. The questions are 1 What would be a reasonable size turnout so its not too big but on the other hand does not look like a crazy track turnout. 2 What would be a good sleeper spacing when I set up my own spec in the scale/gauge section and any other usefull advice when inputting data in this section. ... topic: 764 custom timber spacing posted: 16 Mar 2009 09:50 from: MalcolmE Hi everyone: I was given Templot for Xmas. It is summer in NZ, and I have only now turned my attention to the learning curve. My interest is modern German DB in N fiNe (similar standards to 2mm but using 9mm gauge). Evening ONE, and I already have a problem. Tried to create a length of straight track using custom rail length and sleeper spacing. Rail is 45m long, but when I started adding sleeper spacings it only accepted 49 (of 69) before closing down the entry screen. In Drawing Pad, I can see the rails shown to length, but only 70% of each length has sleepers. Have I struck a limit, or as I expect am I doing something wrong. can anyone help! thanks; MalcolmE, Wellington, New Zealand posted: 16 Mar 2009 10:55 from: Martin Wynne Hi Malcolm, Welcome to Templot Club. I have been asked to make a small amount using a light rail section in 7mm standard gauge. I was thinking of using code 100 BH rail as that comes out very close to 60lb/yard full size BH. The option of copper clad sleepers is fine for the sections that will be ballasted over the sleepers with lots of weeds but some needs to have chairs. Can you get these in 7mm scale for code 100 rail? Although I understand and have largely figured out the 'shove timber' function and other associated bits, ultimately I've got no idea on prototype sleeper patterns, how they were laid etc. For example, I've created a nice, neat relativey simple straight double junction using B8 crossings, but how were the timbers laid? Should the sleepers go across both points/turnouts in one 'unbroken timber'? Do they remain perpendicular to the points as they go under the diamond, or do they alter to be perpendicular to the diamond itself? I've seen a few photos and delved into a couple of books, but clear images seem hard to come by. ... and, 3. The cost, time and difficulty involved in converting my very large stock roster's wheels was going to be silly. I also had a horrible feeling that if I took this on, I was going to become disheartened by the lack of progress and the project might just lie unfinished and gather dust...something SWMBO would not be best pleased about. As a result of all this, the plan died and was filed away. Now I'm thinking that I might attempt to use 4-SF track standards with modified sleeper spacings to give me the best possible track appearance whilst allowing me to run my Roco/Lima/Hag locos and coaches as they are without having to replace the wheels. It also means I could use Peco points in my fiddle yard and have tighter radius curves in the return loops from the scenic section to the fiddle yard, thereby reducing the space taken up. Is the idea sound? Or am I missing something? Last edited on 25 Feb 2020 22:37 by Alan McMillan posted: 25 Feb 2020 18 ...

To build skills I am planning to produce, with the aid of Templot, a model of Charwelton based on the 1900 survey, when it was a simple through station and small goods yard. Can anybody advise me as to the timbering used on turnouts by the GCR when the London Extension was built? Also are they likely to have used a standard V crossing angle on most turnouts or would each one have been determined by location? Lastly they used 30' rails and 9' sleepers with 11 sleepers per length; how far in from the rail ends for the first and last sleepers on each rail length? I have asked this on the GCR forum but this did not produce enough detailed info. I hope this is a suitable query for the Templot Club as it is not a technical question about using Templot as such. I thought stretcher bars just pulled the blades the correct distance apart, but it looks as though in one direction these bars push to close the blade. On the model, Masokits seem to offer a very reasonable representation, and are surprisingly strong. My concern is whether they are too strong!- and not very flexible. My previous experience so far has been to use a moving plastic false sleeper with Peco pins inserted from below, one for each blade, each one cut short, curved round and soldered to the blade. Thus the pins can swivel in the plastic, and the design works perfectly, but is just not satisfactory visually. I wonder whether there are any other designs out there? ... topic: 979 Laser Cut Templates posted: 23 Nov 2009 14:47 from: Donald MacLean I have seen posts on the forum regarding availability of laser cut sleeper configurations for complex track sections. (C& L) My (convoluted) question is this. As 'printed' templates can be developed showing only inner stockrail faces and crossing vees, is it possible to derive CAD-type (DXF?) machine readable outputs of specific point formations so that 'physical' templates could be cut out of wood or plastic of appropriate thickness? This would simplify the accurate fixing of the outer rails and crossing. I realize that this would only benefit those who are content with using a sub-set of 'standard' templates. In my case straight B-6s, and curved B-8s. But as I will need about thirty sets of points on my 'new-and-improved' layout it would appear a cost effective way of proceeding. ... width to 45mm and the foot-width to 90mm, with rails vertical. This is entirely a guess, but the drawing appears to show a mark at the end of planing to confirm it. The best straight switch I can fit is at 1:21 deflection angle, length 3465mm. The heel blocks appear to be on a timber centre, although this causes a discrepancy in the timber spacings. You may want to do some more timber shoving on this. All timbers are 200mm wide (another guess), plain sleepers are 1600mm long (from the drawing). The switch rails and V-crossings are on sole plates, so the usual UK alignments to the timber centres do not apply. I set the blunt nose to 15mm (another guess), with the overlap on the A timber negative at -200mm. I adjusted the crossing entry straight to get the required lead length, with a good match to the drawing. Here are the switch dimensions: -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ...

However I do find that current display of Percentage rolled in, is not quite as informative as it may be. Let's set up a simple example. I have plain track template A with 11 sleepers, and track template B with 13 sleepers. I am using 18 rail sections of 18 sleepers in length. So I using Roll Rails I can adjust template A (roll in 7 sleepers) to maintain 18 sleepers between the templates. Two issues arise, the display being in percentage is one, but maintaining the correct distance between the last sleeper in template A and the first sleeper in template B May I suggest, that the following are considered: 1) The display is changed to number of sleepers rolled in rather than a percentage 2) An option to roll in a specified number of sleepers 3) The ultimate ...

On secondary and branch running lines, the gang would replace them when the chair screws would no longer hold or remain tight, or the timber was so split that it was clearly not capable of holding the rails to gauge. In loops, sidings and yards they would likely need to be much worse before being replaced. A lot depends on how many? A single sleeper may be allowed to remain for a while, but several in a row would get replaced. At the far end of a little-used siding the sleepers may never get replaced, gently rotting back to nature as the decades passed. This works very well. However, I am having little success in trying to copy the control template once I have modified the sleeper spacings and widths. For example, I went into Real/Switch Settings and set an A switch using the control template which had been modified to the desired timbering. However, when I apply this for other turnouts the timbering stays as per the Templot default. I have also tried copying a whole turnout and adding this but usually I get a message saying I cannot do this because it is already in the storage box. I can manually modify every turnout but for a layout 70' x 22' some short cuts are desirable! Any help would be appreciated.
