... topic: 1272 Sleepers/timbering at track panel joints posted: 15 Oct 2010 20:13 from: wcampbell23 I am trying to find out about the use of wider timbers at the joins in 60 feet standard track panels. I have recently purchased 8'6" scale ply sleepers and the packs include a proportion of 12" timbers, as well as the usual 10" sleepers, for use as end timbers. I would be grateful for any information about the use of differently sized sleepers/timbers at track joints. My own project is based on an ex-Caledonian line in the early 1950s and so any responses directly relating to Caley practice would be helpful. Thanks in anticipation. ... topic: 1300 Making slips using C&L components posted: 5 Dec 2010 08:22 from: roythebus A bit of advice needed here, having nearly finished my track plan, I've started building a double slip using C&L components in OO gauge. Is it recommended to use PCB sleepers in certain places such as under the K crossings as this would seem a weak spot, and it is difficult keeping things in alignment just using the C&L plastic chairs glued to plastic sleepers. Also, does anyone make a V crossing jig as I have to make about 50 for my layout and to use the ready made C&L units would be rather beyond my pocket! posted: 5 Dec 2010 13:06 from: JFS You can't solder rail directly to PCB sleepers as they will support the rails at a lower height than the chairs. I always use small brass or N/S strips to secure the different bits of rail which comprise the crossings. These can then be secured to the (plywood) sleepers using Exopy ...

Nothing that can't be done another way, I just thought it might be useful. Could we have a "apply" button in the "plain track rail lengths and sleeper spacings window" that would apply the current setting, but not close the window? I must admit I'm being lazy here and not working out the sleeper spacing (again for a fiddle yard), and just trying different settings before settling on one. It would just save a couple of clicks. If I was being really lazy, I'd ask for a plain track option, where ...

Hi Len, Yes, that table is from BRT3 of 1964, page 54. It shows the spacings for traditional jointed track with timber sleepers for the BR post-nationalization era. The table shows centre-to-centre dimensions, so to create spacers for a jig you need to subtract 10" (the width of a sleeper) from each dimension. Modern concrete-sleepered CWR (long-welded ...

As I need to keep an eye on the pennies and actually have some time to make things, can I ask if, in addition to Martin's 7mm 'standard' Peco points, anyone has templates for the new curved points, the double slip and diamond. As long as they take up the same space, so to speak, that will do, I'm not looking to match the sleeper spacing and such, just have the rail ends in the right place and pointing the right way. May I also ask if there is a purveyor of the above items in kit form with FB rail (not copper clad sleepers)? And finally, if I do go s/h Peco route, is it possible to remove the 'bent' sleeper without risking the geometry going all wobbly. You can buy code 75 flex track from suppliers such as C& L which is much closer to prototype dimensions, and hence to Templot, which will look much better when finished. You can also buy point kits which will provide chairs and information on how to use them. You could of course construct PCB pointwork and add cosmetic chairs; personally I've found that approach a bit tedious and would suggest using plastic sleepers as per the above kits, or ply sleepers, with the chairs glued to the sleepers. I think I have the lengths of J1 and J2 correct, but I can't seem to get the spacing correct. What parameter affects this spacing? The timbers (ties) in the switch front are part of the switch, and are set up as part of a custom switch. You can choose whether they should be standard plain track sleepers (normally 10" wide in the UK, but you have probably set something less for narrow-gauge) or turnout timbers (normally 12" wide, but you have probably etc.). You can have up to 5 such ties, and you can set the spacing for each of them individually. The spacings are measured backwards from the blade tips (points). Setting a zero spacing terminates the sequence, so if you want only 2 such ties you would make the third spacing zero. However, the ...
