... a Temploted 1:8 crossing. I have got this as near to correct as I can. It is obvious that there are imperfections in the drawing, partly due to photocopying (probably a number of times) and also inaccuracies in the drawing itself. My first problem is that the 2 crossing fine points and the center of the crossover should line up by the basic laws of geometry, unless I am missing something. For the moment I have put this problem to one side and concentrated on the turnout. Ignoring the sleepers, wing rails and check rails (which I think I can handle) I have tried constructing a turnout to match the drawing. As I don't know if it should be a straight, curved or semi curved switch I have made all three. I must admit that in my ignorance my methods have been largely hit and miss, guided a little by Templot Companion. Attached is the relevant Box file. I will also post the Shape file and the two scans. I would be grateful for any advice to help me ...

It is a 1:9 turnout, Radius 130 m, timber is 185 mm width and 1800 mm length, adding 100 mm in length to the timber, sleeper is 1800 mm length and 185 mm width. I have attached three pictures, one with the complete turnout overview and one detail of the switch part. The third is my model of the turnout in Templot: 3585_241550_030000000.png I have tried to model it in both a curved and semi-curved version, mainly because I really could not figure out what it was precisely. For a girder underbridge this would usually be rails chaired on waybeams with the metalwork visible, or else ballasted on a deckpan with sleepers visible. Is this old-style ballasting over the sleeper tops? For incremental span lengths I don't think there is a prototypical figure. Bridges tend to be designed to fit each site. You could perhaps provide the two end sections (actually we only need one of them, it can be mirrored to provide the other end), and two or three different lengths of middle sections which can be stretched slightly by the user if necessary. When the turnout is a Y the the distiction becomes most curious. I am somewhat puzzled on this as the loop to works siding has it's branch road heading to the siding. This was changed to a curved turnout for the reason of it "feeding a siding. The main road apears to have continuous radius and there only a couple of sleepers of straight track back to the turnout on the main road. This has me questioning "crossovers should have normal turnouts as to not form an S in the crossover. So the formation in this case is turnout branch road "Normal Turnout" so we have maybe 8 sleepers worth of straight, then about 3 more and then a curved main road of the turnout onto the loop. Now comes the stock rail joint to toe, and its explained as follows: This is the switch front distance from the stock rail joint at the left end of the turnout to the "toe" (blade tips). For GWR switches this dimension is normally 64 inches, elsewhere it is usually 65 inches. There are normally 2 standard sleepers occupying this space. This is where it starts to get tricky, on my prototype turnout and american rail in general the joints are staggered. I guess Ill just compromise and skip it, setting it to the shortest distance in my drawing. 2094_221300_480000000.png Looks like I have it right there, 4' 6"= 54 inches Next is length of switch rail blade, this is also hard since according to the prototype drawing they are not of the same length. ... have had a breakthrough this week on getting large Templot drawings printed by a commercial printer. My project is a large garden railway in O gauge where there are some complex crossings. All the drawings have been completed in Templot and I am currently working in my garden shed where an eight road fiddleyard is required. My concerns are as follows. Up to now I have built turnouts on melamine boards where I have used spray on photo mount adhesive to stick the Templot drawing down. Then I use double sided sellotape to hold the sleepers in place. Finally, the chairs and rail are installed. When completed I carefully lift the whole assembly off the double sided tape. This works well for single points but when I come to build larger crossing, say a double scissors, I would prefer to build the assembly in situ on the baseboard. However, with the layout being exposed to the elements I am concerned about the bonds between the baseboard (which is likely to be made from waterproof tiling board), the paper Templot drawing and the plastic sleepers ...

If this is the case, then it looks as if I have a long haul ahead of me measuring and placing each and every chair and timber for all non plain track templates (the plain track being catered for through the plain track options menu, then selecting rail lengths and sleeper spacings). I'm sure however, you will have another option available for me in Templot, which I yet need to discover (showing my ignorance again). I agree with your point about the dynamic stresses not being as severer at the throat of the station, where the speed of trains is much slower than that of the faster main running line junctions, in my case for New Street, the throat speed is limited to 10 mph and in the station area it slows to 5 mph for the very curved areas ...
