... reproduction of the LNER P-way standards book. Templot turns out a respectable version of this with the timbers sized and shuffled about, but when I try to stitch it into plain track it gets complicated with overlaps. The prototype, though dead straight, is complicated by one road being in 30' panels and one in 45' panels. I've tried laying a closure panel to the more modern spec to joint into the 30' road but it does not make a great deal of difference to the overlaps between timbers and sleepers in the six-foot. Would the real thing have coped with this through moving the exit road joint away from the crossing nose and would the plain rail used have been in 45' or 60' lengths. My first turnout will be a 1 in 6 based on one of the N gauge ones in Templot- obviously that timbering isn't at all suitable and it occurs to me that any arbitrary dimension I might set for sleeper spacing in the turnout might not work anyway. How do you find the system as a way of construction? I would prefer to go along the route of soldered construction on copperclad sleepers, rather than ply and rivet, or ply/plastic sleepers using glue and plastic chairs, even though I know the plastic chairs give a good quality of realism. The latest Masokits catalogue (No 19) hosted by the Scalefour Society refers to point kits, but doesn't then list any. The option seems to be a fret of 2 bolt chairs, and a fret of 3 bolt chairs, for pointwork. I'm now showing my ignorance, that I don't know much about chairs beyond the fact that there are special chairs for certain parts of the turnout. Without this, when the rail expands in the summer, I would have thought it would have pushed the whole curve outwards. Or is the ballast strong enough to hold the expanding steel?
