It may help to be specific and say "if you know xxxxxx xxxxx xxxxx then you are familiar with UK pointwork geometry" Hi Rob, Well I'm assuming that if someone arrives at Templot wanting to print a specific individual template, say a B-7 in EM curved onto 6ft radius, then they already know what that is. In which case they have a completely different starting point on the NEW dialog and don't need to know anything about mouse actions and track planning at this stage. So they are better off jumping out of the track planning tutorial and going straight to the template printing video instead. There are a great many users in this "I just want to print a template instead of buying one" category. It was after all the original purpose of Templot. It's also fairly simple to drag models of the chairs into the correct positions and orientation and combine them to produce an STL file to drive a printer. What is not so easy is producing 3D models for chairs that a) actually work, and b) don't look too horrible! I think I have reached a point where I'm limited by the printing technology itself. The results are actually a lot better than I thought they might be when I started out. Anyway, I've been making some wild guesses about chair dimensions, and I have not had a lot of luck finding anything on the Web. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Platform edges I've noted in passing, and will try to give them a go. I was working on a plan for a future project which was looking quite good; unfortunately 6 months ago I started building a new computer (W7, Intel core-i5, loads of memory etc) to replace my nice but failing XP machine, but with the log jam of things to do that has only just been completed (I'm using it now). I now have the required amount of LED's and controllers from DCC Concepts, so thought I'd make a start on creating the track plan. My first thought was to use Sketchboard, but once I started to enlarge the panel, the track edges became jagged. The final mimic panel is going to be something like 800mm long by 400mm deep. I can't say the exact size as it's going to be governed by the need to place LED's within the track lines. The bezels of the LED's are 7mm diameter. In total there will be at least 72 LED's on the panel showing the turnout detection of 36 turnouts. What is the best way of accomplishing this? Especially compared with the great advantage of starting from a known repeatable condition every time -- which also makes it much easier for me to provide user support. Throughout that period producing documentation for the inexpert users of the software was a central part of the activity, in particular "getting started" documentation to get users actually using the software for something useful, as well as documentation for support of more demanding projects. I think this worked, in the sense that we had a large number of users applying the software, with every indication of success, and with a moderate level of queries easily handled by our advisory service. So in terms of providing documentation I think that by and large I know what I'm talking about. Not a totally new problem but much more prevalent due to the zero failure policies that are in place in the modern education system in most countries. It doesn't prepare students for failure. As for "spoon feeding", there is nothing wrong with it as a teaching method. In fact it is the basis of 'one to one' teaching. As a music teacher it is the starting style of teaching I use. But there comes a time where one must learn to think rather than just passively receive. I do find that among the many influences that decide whether this occurs is parental influence. The exposure to a parent's problem solving and their educational levels can be very noticeable. And there is nothing wrong with the "learn it by doing" method, other than it can take longer. Otherwise you may find things get very confusing. If you opt to save and use your program preferences, TDV will start in classic Templot mode each time. Revert to trying out the new Quick-mode feature when you have found your way around: 2_180351_050000001.png You can always quickly see which mode you are in -- classic Templot displays an orange T: 2_180351_040000000.png You can quickly swap modes using the shortcut keys -- PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN. I started some experimental work a couple of years ago, and I have now returned to it. It seemed that if the output was to be of any use in 3D printing, the chair outlines would need to have the proper corner radii. It's a lot of extra calculation with 4 chairs on most crossing timbers, but it hasn't impacted too much on the screen response for full track plans. Obviously you would switch the chairs on only for the final printed templates, they are not needed while track planning. It's fiendishly complex. For example the REA bridge chairs (L1) have a larger corner radius (1.3/4 ") than ordinary S1 chairs (which have 1" corner radius): 2_161458_330000001.png And GWR slide chairs have a ...
