... reasonable suggestion, though it did deflate mojo a little (though it was just a small factor in reality). Originally I came up with a small terminal for a 2 car unit or a pull-push 2 carriage+ engine and some goods sidings. It just didn't gel in my head though. Natalie (my friend whom I go to shows with and plan these things with) suggested looking at the Harton Electric system. Wanting to keep things as simple as possible and within the 6ftx1ft6" space (+ 2-3ft storage), the High Staithes part was selected as being simple and workable. Stock will mainly be 4 wheel hopper wagons and 0-4 -0 electric locos. Possibly 0-6 -0DH and Bo-Bo electric locos could turn up. I had lived at Bawtry during the 1980's but until I read this book I hadn't thought of using it as the prototype, the station at the time I lived there having been closed for many years. The book showed a busy little station with local passenger workings to Doncaster and Grantham, a goods yard, coal train loops and storage sidings, and main line express trains thundering past. There was even a branch line though in the 1930's this had been reduced to one goods train a week. The book included a hand drawn map of the track layout- with a scale! It was a much larger place then than it was when I lived there and the goods yard had become an industrial estate. So, over the last year or so I have been working on a Templot plan of the area using the map as a background image. The ...

It is likely to be rotated at a slight angle from it, and some lines which are dead straight in one might be fractionally curved in the other (platform edges for example), and vice versa. Also, the scaling might not be exact, and you may want to adjust it very fractionally. The NLS scanned the old paper sheets, which after a century of storage may have shrunk/distorted a bit and may not have been printed as accurately as modern maps in the first place. When I was developing the code I spent a long time looking at these original scans from different parts of the country and comparing the dots-per-mile values. The first is storage capacity. Do you want roughly equal length in all roads? That means laying out the turnouts in a tree configuration with each road splitting into two. Or with one much longer road but each additional road getting progressively shorter? That means laying out the turnouts in a string along the inner or outer road. If the string configuration is laid along the running line, it has an advantage for model control in that to select a road only one turnout needs to be reversed, the rest being reset normal. So a ...

That design trades the slip for a second tandem turnout -- turnouts are always easier to build than than diamonds. After cogitating on this for several days I'm inclined to agree. I think the first design is workable and it gives a nice complex piece of track to gawk at. The siding above the platform would likely be used for motive power storage, and possibly for refuelling so I think I can live with it being shortened to this degree. Thanks! Having started to get to grips with Templot I have produced the attached plan. I have yet to complete one end of the fiddle yard where the Cannock lines rejoin the main lines. The fiddle yard is very simple, but with the length of each road I could fit around six long scale length trains on each road, so with a few shorter trains there should be plenty of storage space without the need to construct too many turnouts. I'm not saying this is unworkable, since a few S scale modellers have worked down to these radii with some success, but it does mean that you have to be careful with the selection of locos and rolling stock which will work through them successfully. Otherwise, it looks a good plan. I was wondering if you might not want some carriage stock storage, and you might be able to squeeze a siding between the arrival and departure roads. This might mess up the design of your station area since it would place the platform faces on the outer sides of the track, whereas your present version could use an island platform configuration which tends to take up less width.
