... Martin Wynne Dear all, When I first developed the Windows version of Templot 10 years ago, I searched quite hard for other users of the .box file extension. The only one I could find was an obscure preferences file for something called Lotus Notes, which is or was "an integrated desktop client option for accessing business e-mail, calendars and applications on an IBM Lotus Domino server". Which isn't something likely to be found on a home computer, so I thought it safe to adopt the .box extension for Templot's storage box data files. But it seems that the SVR's SignalBox simulator program is also using the .box extension for its parameter files. I don't know why my searching didn't find that, perhaps SignalBox is a more recent program. It's unfortunate to say the least -- two railway-hobby applications using the same file extension. During installation of Templot there is an option to associate .box files with Templot, and it's ticked by default so I imagine most users have done that. It means that Windows now regards all .box files ...

Hi Rob, Funny you should say that -- it's what I've been working on in the last hour. There is a bit of a complication. The storage box can contain templates to several different scales, so compiling an aggregate list of model sizes for the entire box is a bit of challenge. ... your patience. Mike posted: 25 Jan 2013 11:53 from: Martin Wynne Hi Mike, Thanks for your kind words. Some of the confusion is caused by the similarity of the words "store" and "save". In an older version of Templot I used the word "keep" instead of "store" but I was persuaded to change it. I sometimes regret that, but it is too late to go back now. storing a template means that it is copied from the control template into your storage box as a permanent record of the state the control template was in at the time. Optionally, it is also displayed on the trackpad as a background template, usually as part of a track plan. The storage box is part of the running program and ceases to exist when you quit a Templot session. saving a Template data file means that all the stored templates in the storage box are saved to a file on your hard drive, in .box format. They are not lost while Templot is not running, and ...

Hi Jim, Don't get me started on the evils of the Windows Document Model. Please don't overwrite existing files when saving. Templot keeps a rolling backup so there is no need to save files every few minutes. Save a file only when the storage box contains enough new work to be worth saving. And then create a new file for it. Leave the old ones until you are quite sure that you don't want them -- at the very least for 24 hours. They are not difficult to delete, you can do it without leaving Templot by right-clicking in the File dialogs. Of course it's your computer and if you want to overwrite existing files when saving data, that's up to you. But Templot is not going to do anything to facilitate that ...

However, the next time I opened Templot, when I went to use the custom switch (the second one generated correctly titled) it was not shown in the list, however, the original "custom: untitled custom switch" was still at the very bottom of the list, see screen shot below. Fortunately, I generated a set of 12ft switch turnout library templates, one for each relevant crossing angle range and put them into a separate appropriately named storage box, so I still have access to those. My questions here are, 1. What happened to the second generated switch in slot 2, why did it disappear when Templot was closed? 2. Am I doing something wrong (or not doing something right as the case may be)? I would have expected to see both my custom generated switches shown in the switch settings menu, effectively adding to the list each time I generate a new custom switch. ... topic: 3260 Total timbering lengths on trackplan posted: 19 Apr 2018 22:18 from: Rob Manchester Hi Martin, The Storage box facility to add up the total length of timbering on all or some background templates is very useful. You can group some templates( say the ones containing only plain track) to sum the sleeper lengths but templates that have S&C work inserted are mixed between two widths- such as 3.3mm/10" and 4mm/12" on an EM or P4 plan. Would it be possible in a future update( ie not now or this week/month but when you have the inclination) to show the total lengths of plain track and turnout timbering as two figures rather than rolling them into one. This would help me( and others?) in checking that sufficient materials are to hand before building comences. I realise that some scale/gauge layouts may have odd timber widths or combinations but I suspect the vast majority of plans drawn using Templot have either one width throughout or a standard plain track ...
