... might sound. In a similar vein, I found one thing last night that would be a real help to those new to Templot. Over the last couple of months, I've been quietly building my proficiency in Templot, in no small part due to having made a rash commitment to a certain Society Chairman to produce a trackplan for him, which subsequently turned out to have double and single slips on a curve! Anyway, I'd been doing some messing around with timbering, and I noticed that the number of templates in the Storage Box had risen from 12 to around 22. Clicking through them individually, I noticed that certain ones were duplicated two or three times, but because they were in the same position in the background, I couldn't see that they were "layered" on top of each other. Then I was poking around in the menus to see if there was anything that would help tidy this situation up. I didn't find anything, but what I did find in the Storage Box menus was the item: Options> On copy to ...

Firstly, whenever you do anything which involves <store and background>, you end up with a duplicated template on the screen. I do not understand why the program is designed to do this? If I read the tutorial it says <just delete the lowermost one>, but I am scared of deleting something that I want. At the moment I tend to open the storage box and wipe from background and then delete it, but that is time consuming (but safe). If I do just use the delete function, is there a restore function if I accidentally delete something important? The second problem I have is with labels. I move these to one side of track or a turnout, but after doing some more work I always find they have changed their position again- usually right into the middle of the turnout where I cannot read them. Why do the labels move from the ...

Change the templates to centre-line-only templates: geometry> track centre-lines only menu item for the control template, followed by geometry> modify group to match menu item. They are then less prominent but still easily accessible by SHIFT-clicking on their name labels. or 2. wipe them from the trackpad. They then become unused templates in the storage box, and in the .box file. On the storage box: group> wipe group from backgnd menu item. If you do this I strongly recommend giving them identifiable names rather than having them all called "no-name". It's then easy to get one back by selecting it in the storage box and copying to the control template, or to the background, as needed. For best results, rename them all with the same prefix, such as "helix-A" say. Then it's easy to ...

Did you save your Control template to the storage box first? The easy way to do this is to use the insert key. In Templot you build up a track plan as a series of background templates (shown in Blue on the Trackpad) in the storage box. You can only alter the Control template (shown in white). To make a copy of a background template and leave the original where it is place the mouse pointer on the desired background template and either right or left click the mouse and select C copy to the control from the menu that ...

... Document Model, which Templot doesn't use. Deleting to the control, making modifications, and storing again is the correct way to modify an existing background template. It's quite fast if you use the accelerator keys and keyboard shortcuts. This procedure is more usual when timber shoving and using partial templates. It's not often necessary when first creating a track plan. There is an option on the delete confirmation dialog "don't ask me again today" which will prevent the dialog appearing again in the session. Note that while deleted from the storage box, the template is no longer included in the rolling backup. If you have previously done a lot of work on it, haven't saved a file, and fear your power cable may be chopped through by a JCB* at any moment, you may prefer to wipe to the control instead. This keeps an unused copy of the template in the storage box, which will be backed up and which you can revert to at any time. (Just look at my plan when it's first loaded and you'll see the dense concentration of them over each of the complex formations on the plan) So what I do is simply highlight the template I want on the background, or one close to it if it's buried among lots of others. I then open the storage box which is now showing that template and then I use the back/forward arrows to get to the one I want so I can use the storage box's "wipe to the control" button. If I want to duplicate that template for any reason, I the use the "re-store and background" button on the main menu which creates an unused copy of the template (in blue) at the end of the template list in the storage box. For example, I went into Real/Switch Settings and set an A switch using the control template which had been modified to the desired timbering. However, when I apply this for other turnouts the timbering stays as per the Templot default. I have also tried copying a whole turnout and adding this but usually I get a message saying I cannot do this because it is already in the storage box. I can manually modify every turnout but for a layout 70' x 22' some short cuts are desirable! Any help would be appreciated.
