... ,,,, Many applications have the ability to look at files without loading is this feasible in Templot. Appreciate it may not be easy but if you could take a look, I would be grateful. Cheers Godders posted: 14 Feb 2014 20:18 from: Martin Wynne Hi Godders, How would you see this working? I can't see an obvious way to see what's in a .box file without loading it. For new .box files we could perhaps include a screenshot of the trackpad, or a list of the storage box contents, or both, in the .box file for use by a "preview" function. And of course you can always set a meaningful file name, or put them in meaningful folders. But none of that is much help if you already have hundreds of anonymous .box files. A possible new function would be "next file" in which Templot reloads the next file in a folder on a single click or keypress? regards, Martin. posted: 14 Feb 2014 21:01 from: Godfrey Earnshaw Hi ...

... is delete to current. I know this delete to the control/current wording is a bit mystifying, but it's the best I can come up with. It means "delete the previously stored template, and transfer the template data to the generator engine so that I can change things and then store a new one when I am ready". Unfortunately I can't fit all that on the menu. I could put simply "edit this template", but that would imply that: a) the template still exists in the storage box while it is being worked on, or b) the template would be automatically stored again afterwards. If I implemented a) it would be impossible to have the rolling backup function because changes to the storage box would be too frequent. It would also significantly slow down the screen response to all the mouse actions. b) is impossible because Templot has no way of knowing when you have finished editing it. regards, Martin. posted: 2 Nov 2010 19:04 from: Paul Willis Martin Wynne wrote: ...

... functions before working on your live track plan. You mention reloading your track plan. It's possible that your plan already contains many duplicated templates, which is why they keep appearing when you try to delete them. As you delete each one, an underlying duplicate becomes visible. Beginners often create lots of duplicate templates, and I don't really know how it happens. Perhaps the word "delete" in "delete to the control" is the problem. There is no easy way to remove duplicates, other than going to the storage box, sorting through the templates, and deleting any duplicates you find. If your track plan consists of only 12 visible templates, there should be only 12 background templates in the storage box. If there are more, some of them must be duplicates. If you would like to post your .box file here I will do that for you and re-post the file. regards, Martin. posted: 14 Sep 2014 23:49 from: Tony W Hi Mike. I can appreciate the difficulties of pitching the information at the right level given such a varied user-base. A user who is new to any software must be prepared to practice, make mistakes and learn- that is how we live all of our life. Explaining the storage box concept is going to be a tricky one as you say. Understanding the concept of the control template and background templates is key to Templot, at least when you move past single turnout design. Are you able to have mouseover prompts for the menu when a user clicks on a background template? A quick prompt as to the use of the make, copy and delete etc may be handy before a beginner ends up with no templates left in the storage box( or duplicate copies of some). Just a thought ...

Following this recent discussion by Richard and Arthur: topic 370- message 14648 I have been giving it some more thought. I've made some changes for the next program update, although I'm still not entirely sure it is an improvement. Maybe it is just change for change's sake. At present the template number simply represents its position in the storage box list, so the number changes as templates are inserted, deleted, etc., or the list is re-ordered on the storage box. This can be confusing when printing templates at different times because the template numbers (the prefix on the timber numbers) may have changed. There would be an advantage in giving each template additionally a fixed ID number which wouldn't change, and which would be printed as the prefix on the timber number instead of the list number. So I have now made such a change ...

A better name would have been "generator output graphic", but who wants such a mouthful on a menu? We are already stuck with "background template" in hundreds of places.
