... of the diamond looking out at a V-crossing. I feel that inclusion of the word "half" in the description" ... half-diamond" is important as it emphasises that this bit of track geometry is just part of an assembly, not the whole of that assembly. Having suggested words for the V-crossings I have realised that finding labels the K-crossings is going to be much more difficult unless we choose to treat separately those cases where both track centrelines are curved but their radii are struck from centres located on opposite sides of the long axis of the diamond. For the cases where either or both tracks have curved centrelines with their radii struck from centres located on the same side of the long axis of the diamond or a track with a curved centreline crosses a straight track I suggest "inside K-crossing" or "outside K-crossing" as appropriate, "inside" or "outside" referring to the curved track. For the case where the tracks have curved centrelines struck from opposite sides of ...

I'd certainly find it annoying for Ctrl-X to stop being 'invert handing' and Ctrl-V being 'store& background'. I haven't really used the calculator that Ctrl-C brings up- maybe because I hadn't realised it was there, and perhaps others do use it, so I wouldn't presume to suggest that this key could be reassigned either. ... be double track, or a cross country line with a couple of branches. Finally I realised that it could be all in a urban setting, if that's what one wanted. I rather like the out in the country approach. In fact there were plenty of junctions sited where the only reason for a station was that lines met there, rather than local demand. Such stations often had limited or even no local goods facilities, but probably had several sidings for routing traffic, plus reasonable loco servicing facilities. One thing which struck me about the plan was that space for storing stock is limited; with the sort of junction I've outlined it might be possible to improve that. What I suggest might be worth considering is replacing the goods yard by a smaller one up in the north east corner. You'd then have space for a slightly larger loco facilities plus at least a couple of sidings for holding traffic in transit where the goods yard was. You might find it a good idea to have an additional trailing crossover between the inner and middle loops at ...

Without it the task would be very difficult. Martin, you asked, what's wrong, well I personally, as a software engineer and user of many modern CAD systems, I would suggest two main areas that struck me. One is the use of the mouse. Lots of that usage is counter intuitive Most CAD systems have fairly consistent approach these days. First you build up a set of parts, either from scratch or from templates. These parts then appear as a selectable list on a pane. The user can then drag and drop such parts where the default action would be to attach itself to the designated" snap" point( as opposed to peg idea), as you drag the new part over the existing trackwork the ...

... my interest, as I have been developing a design for a West Highland layout with trackwork following North British practice, in which sleepered formations were the rule rather than the exception. A trivial observation regarding your crossings is that the nose of the vee in some cases extends slightly beyond the timber on which it is carried, and I wonder whether that reflects NER practice, or whether the timber should be set in a slightly different position, particularly if there is a holding down bolt in front of the nose. Another feature that struck me was the alignment of timbers at right angles to one or other of the routes through a crossing. That was the way I laid out my representations of North British crossings until I read Richard Chown's comments at topic 401 – see in particular point 10 in post #92. As a result of this I adjusted my designs so as to align timbers carrying A, B, C, D, X and Y chairs on a line drawn at right angles to the bisector of the vee. I did this in the ...

Matt M is right in that the splice rail is spliced into the point rail, although seemingly less so than with BH, and the actual nose is the web of the point rail so the ends of the two rails need to be splayed out slightly- exactly the same as with BH. It also struck me just now, when making up a tool to make a roller gauge to suit, that roller gauges for FB rail will only hold the head! Something else to be aware of- make sure the rail is actually sitting flat. I think accurately making a tool that will cut a slot to hold both head and foot is beyond me. One possible difference between CR and NBR practice lies in the positioning of the switch rail joint.
