... a little to remove excess play the results on 1.06mm strip are impressive. The Guillotine already has a raised edge on the table to ensure square cuts; improvising a fixed stop (adjustable maybe) to enable batches of same-length sleepers to be easily cut will be a doddle. I also tried some 1.6mm strip- the results are also good (not quite as good as the thinner strip, but after ballasting you would never know). It's a bit more brutal though, with a decided grrr-ronk (technical term) as the blade goes down. I'll post a couple of photos to show the Guillotine and resulting cut (1.06mm strip) under "PCB Sleeper Cutting" in the Photos section. ... topic: 696 Rugeley Trent Valley posted: 16 Jan 2009 12:42 from: Mark Pelham This is a long term project for the future so not much progress will be seen for some time. Having started an N gauge layout based on Lichfield/Tamworth which as numerous "features" (ok, flaws) and subsequently seeing Castle Hill at Wakefield, it was inspiring to see a nice scenic 30' long 2mm layout. The fact that it all packs into one reasonable size vehicle was even more reason to get me thinking (it doesn't take much!). My main interests lie in the WCML scene around the turn of the century so the prospect of running scale length trains on a long gentle curve along a ~30' layout seemed quite appealing. I initially thought of basing the plan on Rugeley Trent Valley with a condensed run to Colwich Junction but having used scale turnout plans rather than Peco geometry I found it took a much larger distance to contain all the trackwork- it'll be worth it for a more realistic appearance though. ...

Hi John, Most commercial pointwork gives the "substitution" radius, i.e. the curve into which the turnout could be substituted. The actual radius in the rails is normally smaller than this, sometimes significantly so. There is a video about substitution radius at: http://www.templot.com/martweb/videos/subs_rad.exe When you get into Templot it is better to mostly forget about radius and think in terms of crossing angles. You soon get a feel for which angles correspond to "sharp", "medium", "gentle", etc. Furthermore this applies to all scales, whereas a radius figure is only meaningful if you also know the scale.
