... has passed and I have forgotten all then I learned of TEMPLOT. I have 2 drawings. One is a template of a standard turnout. This is a continental 750mm gauge track with a 1:7 Frog. The other drawing is a single line drawing of the station which appears to be to in the proper perspective horizontal and vertical when I drop onto Google Earth. I believe I need to approach this systematically. 1) Create a new Custom Gauge, 2) Create a standard template for turnout and track geometry and timbering, 2) Record this new template as a library, 3) Import the station track plan background into a new box, 4) Create full track template, print and build. In order to become more proficient with TEMPLOT, I need to learn the nomenclature, because it took me some time to move the peg to the frog point (FP) in order align the geometry as best as possible. Where is there a place to learn the acronyms? I am still working on item 1 and 2. I ...

... :34 from: Martin Wynne As I mentioned, the reports of folks using 3D printing to create bullhead chairs has spurred me to move chairing in Templot from the NOD* list to the to-do list. I started some experimental work a couple of years ago, and I have now returned to it. It seemed that if the output was to be of any use in 3D printing, the chair outlines would need to have the proper corner radii. It's a lot of extra calculation with 4 chairs on most crossing timbers, but it hasn't impacted too much on the screen response for full track plans. Obviously you would switch the chairs on only for the final printed templates, they are not needed while track planning. It's fiendishly complex. For example the REA bridge chairs (L1) have a larger corner radius (1.3/4 ") than ordinary S1 chairs (which have 1" corner radius): 2_161458_330000001.png And GWR slide chairs have a full semi-circular end on the inside, for example. ... topic: 2734 3D Printed Track and Turnouts posted: 9 Aug 2015 05:18 from: Andrew Barrowman Greetings fellow Templotters, As some of you already know, I've been messing about trying to print turnout bases on a 3D printer. It's fairly easy to create a 3D model of the timbers in CAD from any Templot template. It's also fairly simple to drag models of the chairs into the correct positions and orientation and combine them to produce an STL file to drive a printer. What is not so easy is producing 3D models for chairs that a) actually work, and b) don't look too horrible! I think I have reached a point where I'm limited by the printing technology itself. The results are actually a lot better than I thought they might be when I started out. Anyway, I've been making some wild guesses about chair dimensions, and I have not had a lot of luck finding anything on the Web. Any information would be greatly appreciated. (Here's a bit of track I've been using to test the latest chair ...

While both stockrails are infact 39' long, the problem is that they are staggered, so if I enter something here it will still make one of them wrong. Ill just skip it and use the prototype drawings later when I add joint bar details. Next is joggled stock rails, and I just skip it. To be honest I dont know if its supposed to be used or not. Here comes my favorite part, timber spacings, this is actually one of the reasons I choose to redo this switch, I want the timber spacings throughout the switch to be visible. Might as well get this correct since Ill use a CNC mill to cut the timbers meaning I got excellent tolerance. I am just about to embark on a mammoth timbering task, have placed most of my track-work in position using un-timbered rails only. Having just started this task, I find that in many areas there is considerable overlapping of timbers, which clearly need be adjusted by either twisting or backward – forward movements to clear each other, but I am not quite sure how much movement (max twist or backward – forward) the critical timbers such as, A, B, C, D, X, Y& Z can be adjusted (moved). Can anyone give me some guidance on the maximum movement of these timbers, and does anyone know if there is anything written down about this particular subject? ... Society have just upgraded their supplies to precision laser-cut plywood instead of sheared strip. The great advantage of riveted ply is that you can get the track built, laid, tested, wired up and running, and only later add the cosmetic half-chairs at your leisure. If the rivet positioning is done carefully, the end result looks just the same as using glued chairs on plywood. Beginners can deal with any misplaced rivets by fettling them with the edge of a Dremel abrasive disc. Fitting the rivets to the timbers can be time consuming, but strangely satisfying. An alternative to the tubular rivets is to used single-sided Vero pins. These are a push fit in 1mm holes, so don't need closing underneath and can therefore be drilled and fitted with the timbers on the template. But they do need trimming underneath afterwards. I doubt they would hold in plywood, but are fine in copper-clad or unclad SRBP laminate (their intended purpose). If double-sided copper-clad, remember to gap the underside too ...
