... topic: 2823 Track bed Width posted: 18 Jan 2016 07:52 from: Gordon S Is it possible to lock the trackbed width to a specific dimension? I have double track width changing from 44.47mm on straight track to 50mm on curve track to avoid long wheelbase vehicles clashing. I've only just appreciated that the track bed width is a function of the track centres and changes as the track centres change. Setting trackbed width at 90mm gives an overall width of 140mm when using 50mm track centres. Reducing that to 44.67mm track centres now means the trackbed is only 134.67mm wide. When building an 'open plan' layout with dedicated trackbed rather than a flat baseboard, it would be useful to set double track trackbed as a fixed dimension for continuity purposes throughout the layout. posted: 18 Jan 2016 08:25 from: Martin Wynne Gordon S wrote: I've only just appreciated that the track bed width is a function of the track centres and changes as the track centres change. ... of the three dimensional nature of my plans, I will always need to load several levels at once to see if there are clashes with board cross frames or Tortoise motors with lower levels. I've done this in the past by loading the whole plan and toggling sections on and off, before saving the whole plan as a new version. Having the file name on the print will be a huge help, so many thanks for adding that info. Right now I have two versions on the go of a revised track layout and trackbed templates. Once they are printed off and stuck onto ply, it then becomes impossible to tell which is which, so adding file names will resolve that problem. I'm sure none of this will be an issue once I've managed to re programme my brain and erase 30 years of working on Windows. Of course I had to do that 3 years ago when I went to a Mac, so know just how long that will take....:-) posted: 13 Dec 2015 16:02 from: ...

But there's no need to mark out the trackbed edges yourself -- Templot will draw them for you. Here's a bit of printed template showing the result: 2_080442_440000000.png As you can see, trackbed edges apply to plain track and turnout main roads only. Templot is not too intelligent about this and leaves you to mark the turnout-road side yourself and scribble out any unwanted overlapping marks before cutting. But it's still a lot quicker than marking all the edges yourself. There's rather more to this than meets the eye -- here are the full Help notes from Templot. In particular note the trick via DXF to get the trackbed edges as part of your baseboard outlines in the background shapes:____ Trackbed Width If you are using open-top ...

Hi John, It is not across the ballast shoulders -- it is the underlying formation width between the cess drains, which defaults to the usual dimension of 15ft for single track. The ballast edge usually extends to the edge of the formation, or it may be a bit narrower. Since the prototype varies so much, it is for the user to set the required dimensions.
