... topic: 3535 Help needed -- transfer of BOX files to TemplotMEC and OpenTemplot posted: 30 Oct 2019 23:33 from: Martin Wynne At present there is no means to transfer BOX data files from Templot2 to the open-source versions of Templot, which use the OTBOX data format. The open-source versions can't open BOX files directly because of unavoidable differences in data formats between the compilers. Which is a significant deterrent to making much use of the open-source versions (OT/MEC). Not before time, I have now got round to doing something about that. I have created a new MECBOX file format to perform transfers between them. It is quite slow to save and load for large box files, but you need only to transfer a file once, after which you can save it in OTBOX format for future working. Attached below is a scruff release 224z of Templot2, with a few new features. The screenshots should be self-explanatory: 2_301753_450000001.png 2_301753_440000000.png The above option is on by default and you probably ...

Indeed this is a different one to my previous efforts as I'm building the crossings separately, directly on a spare Templot plan and then transferring them complete to the waiting sleepers! Not done this before but it does enable me opportunity to give the crossing a good old wash and brush up( after all the soldering) that isn't possible if already stuck in place and, as I mentioned earlier, when using steel rail that's a real benefit in keeping corrosion at bay. I feel also that it helps me build a more accurate crossing which is so often the part of turnout construction that trips me up! Kind regards Andrew posted: 1 Jan 2019 00: ...

Whether that is actually how the file viewer works in practice I'm not entirely sure* (it uses David Baldwin's HtmlViewer component to display them), but the PNG option is provided so that users can choose whichever option works best on their system. Whether to remove the PNG option is one of many questions which an active OT/MEC group might want to consider. I tend to adopt the IIABDFI approach (if it ain't broke don't fix it). I'm making good progress with a new file format for transfers to OT/MEC, I should be able to post a scruff release in a day or two. You will then be able to load Jim's .box files into OT/MEC to test the file viewer. [Expensive I know, but this will be my last layout and I want to ensure it will be done right. And it will only be on the complex bits!] First questions then are, obviously, has anyone tried this? And, if so, did it work and was it worth the effort? Did the heat of the transfer process affect the cork underlay? Secondly, if this is unexplored territory, how ...

So thoughts naturally turned to doing something similar for the BGS background shapes files, which are equally incompatible between T2 and T3 as they stand. The existing BGS binary file format was invented in 5 minutes flat on a wet Wednesday afternoon 25 years ago, solely for the purpose of getting some data from one computer to another before teatime, on a floppy disk. (The data, not the tea.) The BGS format has been a constant thorn in my side ever since. It is so primitive that it has been impossible to add some much-needed extra functions to the background shapes, and the picture shapes and maps had to be bolted on the side as separate SK7n and SK8n files. It should have been replaced years ago of course -- but I originally intended that the sketchboard functions would replace the background shapes entirely. ...
