Similarly for several other mouse actions, clicking that symbol toggles two related mouse actions, e.g. in F6, toggle between 1st and 2nd transition radius, for a transition, toggle between the start and zone length adjustments. When not doing such pre-defined swaps, it toggles back to the most recent previous mouse action. The diverging route is called the turnout road, and that side of a turnout is the "Turnout Side", TS. The linking roads are straight, so in order to complete the design in Templot you need to do some additional work to terminate the turnout curves at the V-crossing. You could use partial templates as shown split at the fine point (CTRL-4). The pink template is a 1:4.95 straight half-diamond, again split at the fine point. Or you could instead do it all in one template by putting a zero-length transition-to-straight at the fine point. Either way however, using a regular crossover like this is not the best design and is very wasteful of space: 2_031930_100000000.png You can save about 100mm (4 ") in 4mm scale and have an easier radius in the Y-turnout by making a curviform crossover instead, as shown in the lower part of the diagram. So far I have completed all the levels on my new RR- the town, staging, lower branch level and upper branch level. I have mastered (so to speak) the various transition options including playing with 1st and 2nd transition zones and the basics of track laying onto background scans. I probably do it a little differently than most in as much as I lay out curves and straights first and then insert turnouts where required. From what I've seen, current thinking advocates setting the Vee up first followed by the check rails and then stock rails. I cannot see the advantage of doing it this way as the slightest error in alignment of the Vee will result in overall misalignment of the point. My method of putting the stock rail in first anchors the overall alignment and the rest follows to suit. I should mention all my points are on transition curves. My question is to all you point builders out there is what is your experience, to Vee or not to Vee? Hi Jim, Bruce, It certainly is possible, and here's a video to get you started on that way of working: http://www.templot.com/martweb/videos/flash/starter/em_starter.html For a large layout it is probably better to do as Paul suggests and lay out the sweeping curves first, using the "make transition" function between them. That way you know everything is going to fit and your radius constraints will be met. You can then insert turnouts in the templates and continue as in the video to create each area of pointwork. But before doing any of that I would strongly suggest playing about with individual turnouts in the control template. Curving them; extending them; shortening them; trying different combinations of switch and crossing sizes; printing them out. That way you will have a much better understanding of what is and isn't ...
