... topic: 2475 Transition specification posted: 29 Jun 2014 14:21 from: Tony Huckin Is it possible to specify start and finish radii and shift of a transition and let the length take care of itself rather than starting with a length of plain line and entering the radii. This would help if you are trying to fit a 180 degree curve transitioning to straight at either end in a limited space. Knowing the circular radius and the shift would give the separation of the two straights. posted: 29 Jun 2014 16:02 from: Martin Wynne Tony Huckin wrote: Is it possible to specify start and finish radii and shift of a transition and let the length take care of itself rather than starting with a length of plain line and entering the radii. This mouse action doesn't affect the alignment, so in this case the position of the peg doesn't matter, and if it's not at either end of the template it will move along with the turnout. regards, Martin. posted: 1 Apr 2012 16:24 from: Adrian (ffoil) Having spent some time over the last couple of weekends playing around with it, I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. But (isn't there always a "but"), I'm having fun and games with a transition curve. I've been trying to follow the instructions at http://www.templot.com/martweb/info_files/make_trans.htm but without total success. I can get it to generate curves, but at least one end is always beyond the limits of the curve that I need to create (if that makes sense). I've tried fiddling around with the radius of the two curves, and the start points, but the curve is still too long. Any suggestions? Adrian posted: 1 Apr 2012 16:39 from: Martin ...

... topic: 1372 Transition curves (again) posted: 18 Feb 2011 22:28 from: Robert Preston Please help. I've tried very hard with transitions, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Please have a look at the attached file, bottom left hand corner. I want to join turnout 63 to curved track 64. So I make a branch track (template 68) from the turnout, and insert a temporary template (69) from template 64. Templates 68 and 69 are shown as centre line only, they approach each other closely, but do not quite touch. If the templates are extended, they do not intersect. Thus they appear to meet the requirements for a transition to be made between them. However, if I delete 69 to control and click on 68, "peg/align tools, make transition", I'm told it's not possible to make a transition between these two curves. What am I doing wrong? Oh, as a rider, is it possible to construct B6 slips in 00-SF ...

... 20:41 from: Robert Preston Evening All, I wonder if anybody can help with something I have been attempting – making an inside return loop as on the attached plan between templates 45 and 46 no name. This design might be unrealistic, but the need to make such concave loops arises generally. I have great trouble getting them to join, even the "get out of jail free" function (aka slew) doesn't help a lot. Am I trying to do something that's geometrically impossible? Or is having a transition curve the problem? Incidentally, I would find some indication of when and when not to use transitions useful. For instance, something like transition curves requires lots of button presses and options. How about a wizard or dragable box that lets you set the start point and end point of a transition curve then does the rest automatically. It followed the initial radius, but when it came to the transition change marker, it got off centre line through the transition area, still following the starting radius. See attached image. It is a shame because this is such a great essential tool aid and very quick to use. Within plain track it is usually better to have a transition from straight to curve, rather than an instant change. But if that's what you do want you can insert a zero-length transition. geometry> transition curve> easement from straight. Then geometry> transition curve> zero-length instant transition at peg. You can then use all the mouse actions to move the transition zone to the desired position, change the radius at each end of it, etc. Or you could split the straight template into 2 separate templates, and then curve the second one.
