But there may be times when both intersections are viable, and other situations where an experienced user doesn't want to bother to actually extend the templates to the intersection before making a diamond there. I did feel that simply asking the user if the chosen intersection was the right one would be the simplest approach. I'm quite surprised that you think some users would find it unclear. They are not that dim, surely? Is this what you want, yes or no, can't really be too difficult to answer, can it? regards, Martin. posted: 24 May 2011 18:55 from: JFS In fairness Martin, this caught me by surprise the first time it happened and it is only "obvious" why the question arises when it has been explained that the two templates have been extended to full circles which must intersect at two different points. When the basic working method of Templot has been grasped they don't happen so often, or not at all if you are working carefully. Likewise the exact function of the jaw on the heel chair is unclear. The inner part of the chair supports the closed switch rail at the correct spacing from the stock rail, and resists the flange forces. But the outer jaw has a slight clearance to allow the rail to open, so it is never in firm contact with the rail. Its only purpose would seem to be to keep the rail more or less upright if the bolts do actually fall out. Thanks for the link to the rodding book. I did see a copy, but haven't yet obtained one.
