For adhesive on ply timbers, I would go for something gap-filling such as 10-minute epoxy. A circular recess in the chair base would make a more secure fixing if adhesion to the resin is a problem: 2_120909_140000000.png It wouldn't much matter if the recess didn't completely fill.
