Having said that on double slips I now make hinged switch blades (again from a single piece of rail fashioned at both ends and shaped first) but use a cast metal fishplate as the hinge, still isolating at the common crossing joints. The cast fishplate is far stronger than the plastic ones which would be usless for this application.
