... occurs to me that any arbitrary dimension I might set for sleeper spacing in the turnout might not work anyway. So should I start with what sleepers are actually needed for support and then just fill in using those fixed sleepers as reference points? If that's the right way for me where do I need support anyway- I think what I am trying to ask is where MUST I put some sleepers? Select the "other gauges" option. At the top left corner of the window that appears there are four custom buttons labelled a, b, c and d. Click on whichever of these you want to use- they are usually undefined. Simply enter the information for your own scale/gauge combination and away you go.
