... the picture came quite close. My next step would be to tweak the radii of the two transition curves by trial and error until they overlapped, keeping both curves the same radius. I can't help feeling that with two curves pointing towards each other that there is a way to join them "correctly", but the 'make transition curve from the control template' won't work as the two curves will intersect.
