On my plan the positions of the tracks are already defined, and the crossover needs to fit into what's already there. The attached picture shows what I was starting from. I did use the 'make transition curve' function to give me a nice s-curve between the two lines, but I couldn't get a turnout to line up with both the running lines and the s-curve simultaneously. Hence the faffery!
