... from: Martin Wynne Mark Zagrodney wrote: I am setting out to create templates for my planned Proto48 layout. I plan to use American Switch& Signal frog and point castings where possible and I was wondering if anyone had already gained some experience deploying those components with Templot generated templates. I believe I can do the customization for things like the 11' points but I was hoping somebody had already climbed that learning curve and was willing to share. Hi Mark, Yes, there are some USA style templates available for downloading: h0_usa_turnouts.png These are in H0, but can be converted to Proto48 easily. On the the gauge/scale list dialog (other gauges... menu item), select P-48 and then click the convert group button at the top. A few things might need tidying up, for example the timber (tie) ends may no longer be set to "in-line". I don't know how closely these 11ft and 16ft-6in switches (points) match the American Switch& Signal products. If you ...

Bob Hobbs wrote: I model to North American standards with very different tie(sleeper) sizes and spacing. I have templates from someone that has gone to the effort to do both an 11 foot and a 16' 6" trunout along with a straight section of offset regular track. Thanks to whomever did this. If you mean this file: h0_usa_turnouts.png it was me wot dun it. If anyone else is looking for it, you can find it at: USA-style turnouts. When the insert turnout into plain track is chosen what is the default? Can that be changed. The turnout which is inserted is the one which was there when the convert turnout to plain track function, or one of the make split functions, was originally used to create the plain track template. All templates contain settings for both plain track and a turnout. The plain track settings ...

... a "switch" is only that part of a turnout which comprises the moving switch blades (points), not the whole turnout. Consequently it is meaningless in Templot to refer to a #6 switch -- this is a #6 turnout: startup_pad.png If you refer to a whole turnout as a switch in the American style you will get in a terrible muddle in Templot. Templot can create any size or style of turnout, including American prototypes. Here for example is a screenshot showing some typical American turnout templates: h0_usa_turnouts.png The Templot data file for these can be downloaded from: http://www.templot.com/samples/usa_turnouts_h0.box (Right-click and "Save Target/Link As...") Those are #5 and #8 turnouts, but using the F5 mouse action in Templot they can be adjusted to #6 or #12 turnouts, or any other size. Likewise using the F6 mouse action they can be curved to any radius. Here's a typical result of doing that. These are #7 and #9 ...

... topic: 1335 USA-style templates posted: 13 Jan 2011 13:58 from: Martin Wynne Some sample USA-style turnout templates in H0. These are generic templates based on typical USA practice and not representative of any specific prototype: h0_usa_turnouts.png This file is not suitable for Templot version 074b -- please upgrade to Templot2. Download from: sample USA-style H0 templates (Right-click and "Save Target/Link As...") These are #5 and #8 turnouts, using custom 11ft-0in and 16ft-6in switches (points) respectively. edit for Templot2 -- when printed, or exported as a PDF file, these templates will now show the rail-foot edges for flat-bottom rail. Using the F5 mouse action the turnouts can be adjusted to any other size. But because the switches are custom sizes they won't change automatically to match the V-crossing (frog) angle. Take care therefore to create only sensible combinations of switch size and V-crossing (frog) angle ...

Stuart Hince has written a tutorial on setting up custom rail lengths and sleeper spacings in Templot. It's specifically for the GWR, so just change the numbers accordingly for Peco: http://templot.com/martweb/pdf_files/gwr_track_panels.pdf If you don't want to bother with that, you could download some USA-style templates from: topic 1335 which includes a plain track template with close-spaced narrow ties: h0_usa_turnouts.png regards, Martin. posted: 27 Nov 2013 19:39 from: MaxSouthOz Thanks, Martin. posted: 28 Nov 2013 08:40 from: MaxSouthOz I've painted myself into a corner.
