Only closed objects can be hatched, and the only closed objects available in the background shapes are circles/ellipses and squares/rectangles square to the grid. The background shapes functions are really quite primitive and not intended to be a full mini-CAD system. One way to represent other shapes is to use dummy templates with shoved timbers, like this: hatched_timbers.png Bear in mind that the timber infill style must be changed to hatched separately for the pad on the screen and for the printed output, and it applies to all the timbers, including those in the track.
