I've just spent almost a week working on a grand plan for a friend who is looking to have a re-design of his current garden railway which will involve putting more of the railway into a building. This will allow for running more months of the year than current. Templates aren't all finished as I have quite a bit of timber shoving to do ! | ||

It's probably as intended, but.... in 'winter mode' you can't get back to the terminus in the middle without setting back - is that meant to be? | ||

At bottom right of the plan are the connecting lines to another "shed", double track to a mainline station, inside double track rising to a high level station for the "electric" services, and three tracks (double main and goods loop) leading to another small station and goods yard. These are all laid with Peco and a couple of Markway double slips and will be staying as they are. The single line off the junction at top left will continue to run up to the present Bexhill, which will become a dedicated goods yard and occassional excursion destination. The through station in the new building is replacing the existing one with all new trackwork. The terminus "New Bexhill" is also a new design, but has been developed so that signalling at the current Bexhill can be re-deployed. The single linking line is an addition to allow running to commence whilst the outdoor loop lines are built. After a phone call last night, I've had a busy afternoon, altering some of the new terminus station pointwork !! |

An impressive piece of work so far. With that complexity of trackwork, I'd have used 31.5mm gauge to improve running quality. It should prove to be a ery interesting build though. Regards Raymond |

I'd love to do it as 31.5mm, but as it is for a friend I have to maintain 32mm gauge standards, especially as the railway has a lot of "visiting" stock running throughout the year. | ||

Hi Ian, I think the layout is great and should provide some interesting operation as well as look professional. Certainly looks better than the current Bexhill station layout. One of the major benefits of using 31.5mm gauge is that any finescale stock will run though it but without dropping wheels when negotiating crossing vees. There is no requirement for altering the back-to-back so, if you still have the opportunity, I'd go for it not just for the superior running but the superior look too. I build an experimental crossover to test out 31.2mm gauge some time ago (you can see it on my website) and it is possible to push a wagon through the crossover, blindfolded, and not be able to detect where the crossings are. It will be the same for 31.5mm. Regards Raymond |

I'd suggest making all your templates 'no timbering' until all the rails are as you want them. You will need only a few of the major templates then to convert back before you start timber shoving. It does make sorting out the crossings and partial templates much easier I find. An ambitious scheme, I look forward to seeing it up and running at an exhibition sometime. Regards Raymond |

Hi Raymond, It is a bit of a pain timber shoving (shuffling) but in some ways it can be quite testing for the old grey cells, so I don't mind the challenge. Unfortunately, this layout will not be transportable, so no exhibition circuit for it I'm afraid. Photos though during construction and when installed, but that is a long way off at the moment. Ian |

Well after the work of April, there have been some changes made to the plan of how it will be constructed. The two lines with no timbering shown are now going to be "tunnelled" as cut and cover, rather than on a viaduct as intended which means the junction to the left of Coulsdon has changed too. The approach to the goods yard has also been altered. One advantage of the tunnel option is that the steepest gradient is relieved from a 1 in 72 to a 1 in 86. Once again, still more work to complete re-timber shoving etc. | ||

Just returned home after our group AGM. The plan for the railway has been voted through, so work on building pointwork will commence soon. Suffice to say that since my last post there have been some amendments and alterations and I've broken the whole scheme down into manageable parts for construction. Ian |

Guess what, I've made another alteration. The diamond crossing bottom right on the plan is now a switched diamond after doing a little research into when they were first introduced. This will negate any issues of wagons trying to change direction through the crossing. Even though the tolerances will be finer than the current Marcway crossing, I thought I'd better play it safe :-) Ian |

Setting out of the scissors crossover has started in preparation for the actual build. As can be seen, some rails have already been chemically blackened. A little update. Work has now started on Phase 2 of the build, and that involves the terminus station which runs along the other side of the shed. It is replacing the original complex which is going to be re-configured. This image shows one of the three relay cases which will be used for traction feed switching based on route setting protocols. This particular case controls one half of the through station, using 24 relays. there are also a number of single pole relays, as well as an OR Gate, which are switched by signals and are mounted under the baseboards.
