Dear all, Apologies for the slow page response times on Templot Club at present. The problems are caused by congestion at the hosting provider. Jim has been expanding his hosting company and now unfortunately finds himself with more hosting commitments than his internet link can easily handle. This is always a gamble, because the only way it makes economic sense is to assume that not all of your customers will want to connect at exactly the same instant. Specifically, some customers which were formerly on leased servers elsewhere have now been brought in-house, some existing customers have been extremely successful and needed extra web capacity, and earlier this year Jim acquired another small hosting company and transferred their customers to his own servers. Jim is apologetic about this, part of the problem is that some faulty equipment (now replaced) failed to record traffic peaks accurately and he was unaware of the true situation developing. Some relief may be possible in the short term by more closely monitoring exactly how much bandwidth each customer is using, but to keep everything in-house and expand his business further it will be necessary for Jim to install a much higher capacity internet link. The snag is that this is a significant additional investment, so not something to rush into at short notice. Whatever happens, it may be next month before anything can be done, so we shall have to carry on as we are for a few weeks. These problems apply only to Templot Club forums, the main Templot web site at http://www.templot.com should be working normally. regards, Martin. |

Good news. Jim has pulled out all the stops on a Sunday afternoon:OK pipe size will be increased at the latest tomorrow during the day. This will cure all current speed problems. regards, Martin. |

Jim installed a much larger pipe yesterday. That's the internet link between his servers and the outside world. But it's a big extra investment for him, so we are expecting some "adjustments" to the hosting fees when they come up for renewal. The result is that most users in the world should be seeing a big improvement today in response times to Templot Club. Unfortunately some users in the UK, including me, and possibly others elsewhere, are seeing that occasionally a page takes a very long time to load. As far as I can trace, this is being caused by errors on an internet link between Colorado and Ohio. There doesn't seem to be much we can do about it, other than hope it gets fixed soon. If a page takes a long time to load, say more than 10 seconds, try clicking the Stop button in your browser. Then click the original link again. The above applies only to Templot Club forums. The main Templot web site at http://www.templot.com has not been changed and should be working normally. regards, Martin. |

Connections to Templot Club, RMweb and Jim's other sites were so slow yesterday that I have given in and signed up for a VPN on a server in Dallas. So far it is working fine. Customers of Opal, TalkTalk and other ISPs who are having similar trouble accessing Templot Club may wish to try this method. It's easy to set up and a lot less hassle than changing ISP, and if it doesn't work or is no longer needed you can cancel the PayPal subscription at any time. This is costing me $15 per month, so not cheap on top of my normal provider costs. But I have to know that I can access Templot Club when needed. As soon as whichever US network is causing this trouble get their problem fixed I shall be cancelling it. If I could find out for sure who is causing it I could send them the bill. Templot Club and RMweb sites are a little bit slower than when a direct connection works. And UK sites are noticeably slower, as you would expect. But it is consistent and repeatable, so I can live with that. While I'm on this connection I'm "in the USA" so I can't get the BBC iPlayer, and it was a bit of a shock to see advertising on the BBC. It takes only one click to revert to a normal UK connection when needed. There are lots of these VPN providers. They aim mainly at customers wanting to hide their tracks on the internet or access blocked sites. I'm using it simply to gain a different connection route to the Templot Club server in Columbus Ohio. The one I'm using is the USA option at: http://www.vpnaccounts.com/questions.html I can't recommend it or otherwise on the basis of only 24 hours use and not having tried any of the others. But it was very easy to set up and worked first time, and so far there have been no problems at all. Please note that these connection problems apply only to Templot Club, the main Templot web site at http://www.templot.com should be working normally on all ISPs. regards, Martin. |

Jim is discussing the problem with the data centre and would like those affected to submit trace reports. We may then be able to find some common factor and locate the problem. Please note this applies ONLY to Templot Club members who are frequently seeing very long load times, i.e. up to several minutes before the page appears. Create a trace report only during the time while you are seeing the problem. Please, please DO NOT submit a trace if Templot Club is running normally for you as it will seriously confuse the issue. How to create a trace report in Windows: 1. Go to the Start button bottom left and then click the All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt menu item. 2. A black window will appear. 3. Please type this: tracert cera.net and then press the Enter key on the keyboard. (cera.net is the name of the data centre in Columbus Ohio where Templot Club is hosted.) 4. Wait until you see the "Trace complete" message. 5. Right-click on the text and click Select All on the menu. 6. Press the Enter key on the keyboard. This will copy all the text. 7. Make a reply here in this topic and paste in your trace (CTRL+V.) 8. In your reply please state which country you are in, the name of your ISP, and the time and date you made the trace. Describe any specific problems you are seeing. 9. I will forward your trace to Jim. Many thanks for your help. A trace report looks something like this: Tracing route to cera.net [66.194.249.109] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 31 ms 31 ms 34 ms lo98.gr-acc-bras-2.as9105.net [212.74.102.16] 2 33 ms 33 ms 33 ms 10.72.4.97 3 32 ms 31 ms 31 ms 10.72.9.219 4 34 ms 33 ms 33 ms xe-8-3-0.bragg002.loh.as13285.net [80.40.155.19] 5 35 ms 32 ms 33 ms xe-7-3-0.scr001.loh.as13285.net [80.40.155.66] 6 31 ms 31 ms 31 ms Opal-ge-2.2.0.mpr1.lhr3.above.net [213.161.78.213] 7 61 ms 41 ms 34 ms so-1-0-0.mpr1.lhr2.uk.above.net [64.125.28.38] 8 119 ms 113 ms 114 ms so-0-1-0.mpr1.dca2.us.above.net [64.125.27.57] 9 111 ms 115 ms 114 ms xe-0-3-0.cr1.dca2.us.above.net [64.125.29.17] 10 119 ms 120 ms 122 ms xe-1-0-1.er1.iad10.us.above.net [64.125.26.238] 11 150 ms 114 ms 115 ms eqix.asbn.twtelecom.net [206.223.115.36] 12 125 ms 122 ms 124 ms cmh2-ar3-xe-0-0-0-0.us.twtelecom.net [66.192.248.86] 13 124 ms 129 ms 128 ms earth-cmh-01.cera.net [97.65.85.2] 14 127 ms 126 ms 127 ms cera.net [66.194.249.109] Trace complete. regards, Martin. |
