Hi everyone i am about to start on track construction and would welcome some tips on painting. As I have to order everything to be sent out from the UK it takes time and is expensive, so need to try to get it right as far as possible first time: - I am going to dye the sleepers using wood dye. (if I can find a French equivalent of Dark Jacobean Oak stain) - Chairs - C&L are brown. Shapeways check rail chairs are grey - so none a nice murky steel colour. What make / colour would you recommend to paint these? - Do I spray these while still no the sprue and then touch up as necessary? - Rail will be NS. What is recommended for a nice grubby track colour? Do I need to prime before painting? Can I spray or brush the rail before assembly or will it make it too difficult to push on the chairs. The thought of painting the rail between each chair without getting paint over the chairs or the sleepers seems difficult (understatement of the month!). Thanks for your advise Arthur |

Painting is a personal thing. And one bit of prototype track can look quite different under different lighting/weather conditions. For example, track in open country in the middle of a hot sunny spell may have the sleepers looking bleached and the rail and chairs a sort of iron oxide colour. Take the same bit of track when wet westerlies are in command, under the soft light of a grey sky and a rain shower not too far away, and the sleepers will look pretty dark and the rail an almost oily brown. I tend towards the latter, playing around with mixtures of red leather, medium grey and earth. A touch of earth is very useful to tone down colours and get different ones to blend together. I'd suggest getting a selection of colours you think might be useful and doing a bit of playing around until you get something which looks right to you; remember, the sleepers, rail/chairs and ballast do need to blend. I'd strongly recommend not painting rail before assembly, but clean/degrease the rail before use; I use meths. To paint the rail afterwards, make sure you're in a comfortable position and do just as much as you can easily stand in one go. With the right brush and position it's not too difficult. I'd do the electronics and test the track thoroughly before painting. Exceptions: painting the surface of slide chairs before use (or leaving them in their natural colour if acceptable) may be a good idea; likewise, painting most of switch rails before use, and the insides of adjacent stock rails before laying the switch rail, may also be a good idea. |

Hi Arthur If you have a look at my thread on GW special chairs on page 3 of Share and Show, you will see lots of close up pictures of the various shades of timbering and chairs plus associated crud built up over 40 plus years, some of the black is bitumen dripped from bitumen tankers. The white paper bits are the most recent additions. All the photo's were taken in September early evening sunlight. Cheers Phil |
