Hi All, Whilst trawling the net yesterday evening, I came across some interesting photos. The first two are of an intersection crossing of the mass transit system in the city centre of Chicago USA. How about trying to model that lot !! The third photo is also from the states and shows an unusual 3 way switch, apparently this is called a stub switch. I rather like the very simplistic switch changing mechanism on the right of the picture. Constructing these type of switches would save a lot of filing in making those point blades !! The fourth photo is closer to home, and shows a scissors crossover with extended check rails from the centre diamond. What is more interesting, is the extended check rail coming towards the camera which I believe the GW fraternity call a ‘lump check rail’. Hi Brian I've built a 3-way stub point and although building it is easy, operating it is less so - the middle road has nothing solid to line up against! http://picasaweb.google.com/103525373077464937002/TanYGraig This is based on the one that used to be at Porthmadog Harbour Station and then got moved to Minffordd. Your first photo would be great fun to build, perhaps using Andy Reichert's Street Track! |

These are interesting pictures, but the fourth one, in particular, is puzzling me. The things that look like odd shsped check rail in both roads in the middle distance -- what are they? What is the thing adjacent to the left hand switch rail in the foreground? Are these overhead lights in the middle distance? I note there is neither third rail or OHLE. I am sure there are many on this forum much more knowledgeable than I. Allan F |

My first thoughts on the matter are, that this particular scissors is used by slightly faster trains (only taking about a few 10s of miles an hour though) that need to change roads without slowing down too much and there is added safety measures there. Just observe what looks like, extra crash barriers at both sides of the track at that point, and I believe, that thing in the foreground you mention is another protection barrier. It does need two motors or levers, but it is much easier to set up than trying to stop one motor accurately in a middle position. tou.png regards, Martin. |

Not that easy to appreciate from the photo but I think the odd shaped check rails in the 'four foot' are there to help strengthen the alignment (i.e. maintain timber positions) against the lateral impacts from running crossover movements. |
