Hi My trackplan has two sets of very curved double tracks on the approach to the terminus. I have added one checkrail so far but I am unsure what should happen at the turnout. I can obviously extend the checkrail for the V back towards the switch but would that happen? The picture on the front of the 2mm society track book almost shows this scenario but the turnout is not on such a curved piece of track and the checkrail stops before the switches. I'm modelling in 00-FS but find that book is such a valuable source of information for track building. 3137_240356_240000000.png Thanks Fraser |

Here are a few pics showing such a check rail extended back to the switch: 2_240614_180000002.jpg 2_240614_180000001.jpg As you can see the check rail is extended as far as physically possible behind the switch rail: 2_230721_050000001.jpg To make room for the check rail chairs, bolted half-chairs are used for the closure rail: 2_230721_050000000.jpg On the GWR and BR(W) the check rail is actually attached to the back of the switch rail, using a fitting called a "check lump". To adjust check rail lengths in Templot, real > adjust check rails... menu item, and click on the label for the required check rail end (not the check rail itself). regards, Martin. |

Thanks for that Martin. The pictures are extremely useful to see what actually goes on. I had already made the (very) long check rails in the plain track using the method described in one of your posts and had extended the turnout check rail but then thought better of it. As you see below I have lengthend the turnout checkrail and I think I might make it a bit like a switch blade to lie close behind the switch rail of the turnout or does it not matter too much that there is a gap? Also at the switch end would the check rail extend to overlap the switch blade as I assume there would be room for it there. I'm using FB rail so maybe that's not such a good idea. Hi Fraser, In NSWGR practice with flat bottom rail is that the side of the foot closest to the running rail is usually machined off to get the rails close enough in regards to check and wing rails as part of leads (turnouts). The whole thing relies on the specially shaped chocks between the rails through which the bolts pass to bind the two rails together. This is regardless of whether the rail is plated or fixed directly to the timber. There is also the tendency to machine the extra angle change for extra clearance into the gauge face of the rail at ends of the check rails. It does depend a little on period as to what happens. I haven't come across your particular issue though I'm sure it existed as NSW ran 8 chain curves on Main lines. Just be aware that it will come down to machining, chocking and special plates in real life; and that may not possible to replicate at scale without a large amount of finicky work. Regards, Matt M. |
