This is probably asking for too much from an already complex program, but is there a way of using the Trackpad to plan and mark the position of 3rd rail installations? The task is quite tricky, requiring the careful positioning of rail runs, insulated supports every fourth sleeper, side entry ramps and not to mention side protection boards. The marking out for drilling the locating holes is taken care of by a C&L jig but that is only good for when you know where the final positions are going to be. Working out where it all fits would be quite easy using a Templot function - or is that a few years' worth of extra program writing?! Colin |

Hi Colin, Templot has no direct support for conductor rails. As you know it is a complex subject in its own right, and one I know very little about. So I have no plans to add it to Templot -- it would be a major programming effort and other things must come first. For example I have done a lot of work on showing bullhead chair outlines, but it is still far from finished so it hasn't made it into the latest program update. Everything anyone could need to know about 3rd/4th-rail track is on Russ Elliott's page here: http://www.clag.org.uk/3rd-4th.html For plain track you can improvise by using the platforms function, adjusting the dimensions of the platforms to represent the conductor rails. The centre rail needs to be set a negative front dimension for the "platform". The position and length of each such "rail" can be adjusted: 2_271834_370000000.png See: real > platforms... menu item. This does mean that you can't have platforms on the same template -- where needed they would need to be overlaid as a separate partial template. To represent conductor rails through pointwork it will also be necessary to overlay partial templates. If you want to add the conductor supports, one way to represent such custom features on a template is to add bonus timbers, and then use the shove timbers functions to convert the bonus timber to whatever you want. It must remain a rectangular symbol of course, but can be twisted to any angle. The advantage of this method is that the features remain in their relative positions as the template is curved. If you want to add side-entry ramps and the rest, this could be done on the sketchboard. You could then show them on the printed templates by selecting the "include sketchboard items" option. In order for these to fully show, you would need to set the timber infill to hatched or none, rather than the default solid infill. See also: topic 1657 - message 10419 regards, Martin. |

Thanks Martin. I will have a play around with the ideas you suggest. The plain runs of third rail on plain track are fairly easy to plan, but it is around junctions that things get interesting. I have had a look at Russ Elliot's page, so have a grounding in the basics. All the best, Colin |

The other way to add third rail is to overlay a 2nd template at the broader gauge and the omit one rail or the other and don't forget that it's always F/B. Phil |

Thanks for that advice Phil. It seems like good idea in that it uses a rail in the template format. As I am only intending the position to be shown, the gauge can be calculated (cannot think of the exact measuement needed right now) and the best layout of the third rails plotted, without too much need for accuracy lengthwise (i.e. to one decimal place). All the best, Colin |

Hi All I have been asked to Templot a 3rd rail track plan in 00, does anyone have a suggestion as to what "gauge" to set the 3rd rail too, it's a Southern Region layout. TIA Phil |

You need to know the position of the collector shoes relative to the bogie sideframes and wheels for the 00 models. You may find that the usual 8ft sleepers for 00 are not long enough to support the conductor rails. regards, Martin. |

Thanks Martin, I will ask the club member to measure up his stock and see where we are. Longer sleepers and timbering won't be a problem, I think there may need to be a compromise between the prototype 1ft 4ins and 00 track as the rail gaps will look a bit daft. Phil |

Hi Phil, The pick-up shoes on SR/BR EMUs should be set at 29.4mm centres in 4mm scale. Hornby have not managed this on the 2 BIL and 2 HAL models, having put the shoes under the shoe beam rather than fixed to the inside face of the beam. That might influence matters. It certainly makes side protection boards unfeasible without correcting the position of the shoes. When modelling using 00 gauge track, I set my third rail with the insulated rail supports at 14.2mm from the track centre line. 00 gauge sleepers are generally 32mm long instead of the scale 34mm, which could leave the third rail appearing too close to the end of the sleeeprs. There is a lot to consider Colin | ||

Hi Colin, Thanks for the info, your old 00 layout Newhaven looked good, so I will follow your lead. I hope your new P/S4 one is progressing satisfactorily, I can't wait to see it. Although I model the GW in the mid '20s, these days I do have a certain nostalgia for the 3rd rail EMUs, as I was born and brought up on it for my first 16 years, although my first trip was behind something black with a hopper bunker at the age of 3 from Horsham to Brighton, about my earliest memory. Probably explains a lot! Phil. |

Hi All Can you just check out that I have got the 3rd rail correct please, the juice rail is only on the main and platform lines the yard will be worked by diesels or electro diesels. Many Thanks Phil |
