im designing my magnum opus layout at the moment , but in the main station I have three crossovers in a row . As usual I'm constrained by space Given I don't want to go below 30" radius anywhere and I will want to propel 2axle wagons over these crossovers , what's the best turnout in 00-SF to give me the greatest radius in the shortest length Thanks Dave |

Hi Dave, 2-axle wagons will be the least of your problems - they will go round almost any radius unless very long wheelbase. You might have problems with couplings and buffer-locking. Generally it is 6-coupled or 8-coupled steam locomotives which create the limiting condition. For the shortest turnout with the largest radius, you could: 1. set a generic type V-crossing (or curviform, but not for crossovers). 2. use a short curved switch. For example, these are both above 30" radius using the GWR range of curved switches: 2_311944_200000000.png Although the one with a 10ft switch is a fraction longer and smaller radius, I think I would prefer it for the easier deflection angle of the longer 10ft switch. But neither of them are going to look very good in a running line. Short 1:5 turnouts are normally found only in yards and sidings. How much space do you have for something longer? If you have several turnouts in succession can you merge two of them into a tandem? Running line turnouts are not usually shorter than about 1:7.5 Changing to a regular V-crossing will shorten the length and reduce the radius from a generic V-crossing of the same angle. But it may then allow a flatter V-crossing angle in the same length as before. Which will be generally helpful for a crossover, especially for long bogie vehicles. What this boils down to is that we can't answer the question without more information about the space available and traffic using these crossovers. regards, Martin. |

Thanks Martin , its a modern irish layout ( i.e. 1970s ->) in 00-SF ( for the track work ) . Traffic is Diesels bo-bo , co-co and the odd 0-6-0 steam special , stock is a mixture of 50-60 foot bogies carriages and mostly 2 axle 00 wagons , with a limited amount of bogie flats |

( all lines are single track ) The track plan contains all the configurations of the prototype , even if the ends are curved , as you can see to handle the " knock shrine " pilgrimage traffic ( upwards of 100 coaches and 30 locos had to be stabled for a Sunday ), there was lots of crossovers to facilitate engine run rounds . I dont want ( if at all possible to place track formations that were not there in real life ) There is one compromise, in the model , the platform crossover is " inside the platform limits ", but in real life the run round futher to the left was used alway. I building the whole layout in templot because I need to squeeze the layout further right to try and lengthen some of the run round loops, the new space for this layout is 18 feet , but its a triangle ,so there is " lost space " at the apex I am considering running the ballinrobe branch line below the two single lines to the right to recover space ( and it would allow be to prototypically model the level crossing in the town for the send single line existing to the right ) fun and games , knee deep in Templot just trying to see if I can get the main two lines in the station within the perimeter of the room and the triangular baseboards comments welcome |
